N14 Road (South Africa)
The N14 is a national route in South Africa which runs from Springbok in the Northern Cape to Pretoria in Gauteng. It passes through Upington, Kuruman, Vryburg, Krugersdorp and Centurion. The section between Pretoria and Krugersdorp is maintained by the Gauteng Provincial government and is also designated the P158, and is also a 4-lane dual carriageway with 2 lanes in each direction. Route Northern Cape The western terminus of the N14 begins in Voortrekker Street, Springbok, at an intersection with the R355, just next to its N7 off-ramp. It leaves the town towards the east, crossing under the N7 and then heads north-east past Carolusberg and through the Goegap Nature Reserve. After a considerable distance, it enters Pofadder from the west, intersecting the north/south R358 in the town centre. The R358 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects the N7 north of Bitterfontein with the Namibian border at Onseepkans via Pofadder. Route Starting from the N7 it heads north-east. It meets the R355 from the south-east and the two become co-signed. The routes cross into the Northern Cape before again diverging. Continuing north-east it reaches Pofadder after some 230 kilometres. Here it meets the N14 at a staggered junction. The N18 is a national route in South Africa which runs from Warrenton through Vryburg and Mahikeng to Ramatlabama on the border with Botswana. The N18 National Route of South Africa is part of Trans-African Highway Network no. 4 (Cairo-Cape Town Highway), which connects Cairo with Cape Town. The R371 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Windsorton with the N14 to Kuruman and Vryburg. Route Its northern terminus at the N14 is in North West. It heads south to Reivilo. North West is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Mahikeng. The province is located to the west of the major population centre of Gauteng and south of Botswana. History North West was incorporated after the end of Apartheid in 1994, and includes parts of the former Transvaal Province and Cape Province, as well as most of the former bantustan of Bophuthatswana. The R385 is a regional route in South Africa that connects Olifantshoek with Hopetown via Postmasburg and Douglas. Route The R385 begins south of Olifantshoek, at a junction with the N14 National Route. It begins by going south-east for 54 kilometres to the town of Postmasburg, where it intersects with the R325 Road. It continues eastwards for 50 kilometres to meet the R31 Road north of Lime Acres. Olifantshoek
Olifantshoek is a town in John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The village is 60 km northwest of Postmasburg and 80 km southwest of Kuruman. It developed from a police post and is administered by a village management board. The name is of Afrikaans origin and means "elephants' corner" or "elephants' glen", referring to the many elephant skeletons that Dutch settlers found in the area. It may also be translated from Tswana "ditlou". History The town was officially founded in 1912. The town was allegedly named after the tusk of an elephant that was used to purchase the farm on which the town was built. Many other elephant bones were found in the area. Keimoes
Keimoes is a town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It lies on the Orange River and is about halfway between Upington and Kakamas. History It attained municipal status in 1949. The name of the town translates in both the Khoekhoe and Khoemana languages. The first translation from Khoekhoe means "large eye". At the Roman Catholic Mission Station in the town there is a natural water fountain called Big Eye or Keimoes. The "big eye" may also come from the vast views that can be seen from the Tierberg, a small mountain outside the town. The second translation is taken from the Khoemana language. The town is said to have gotten the name in the 1860s from Klaas Lukas, a Khoemana leader Klaas Lukas called it Keimoes (‘mouse nest’) after the colonies of mice living there. The discovery of Middle Stone Age stone tools such as, blades, points, scrapers and one adze found in Keimoes confirms the prehistoric activity in the town. R27 (South Africa)
The R27 is a provincial route in South Africa that consists of two disjoint segments. The first segment, also known as the West Coast Highway, connects Cape Town with Velddrif along the West Coast. The second runs from Vredendal via Vanrhynsdorp, Calvinia, Brandvlei and Kenhardt to Keimoes on the N14 near Upington. The connection between Velddrif and Vredendal has never been built, although it can be driven on various gravel roads. Originally the R27 designation continued beyond Upington all the way to Pretoria, but this section became part of the N14 and various other roads. In Cape Town the highway connects with FW de Klerk Boulevard ( N1) near the Table Bay Harbor and then runs north along the coast for stretch that is known as Marine Drive.
