''Nälkämaan laulu'' (meaning "the song of the hunger country") is a Finnish poem by Ilmari Kianto. It was turned into a song by Oskar Merikanto. The poem is a traditional poem from the region of Kainuu. Finnish Language
Finnish ( endonym: or ) is a Uralic language of the Finnic branch, spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside of Finland. Finnish is one of the two official languages of Finland (the other being Swedish). In Sweden, both Finnish and Meänkieli (which has significant mutual intelligibility with Finnish) are official minority languages. The Kven language, which like Meänkieli is mutually intelligible with Finnish, is spoken in the Norwegian county Troms og Finnmark by a minority group of Finnish descent. Ilmari Kianto
Ilmari Kianto (7 May 1874 – 27 April 1970), also known as Ilmari Calamnius and Ilmari Iki-Kianto, was a Finnish author. He was born in Pulkkila, Northern Ostrobothnia, and is best known for his books ''Punainen viiva'' ("The Red Line", published 1909) and ''Ryysyrannan Jooseppi'' (published in 1924). In his books, he describes people and living at Suomussalmi municipality in Kainuu region. He died in Helsinki, aged 95. Composer Jean Sibelius used Kianto's poem 'Lastu lainehilla' (Driftwood) as the lyric for the last of his Seven Songs, Op.17 (1902). Oskar Merikanto
Oskar Merikanto (; born Frans Oskar Ala-Kanto; 5 August 1868, Helsinki17 February 1924, Hausjärvi-Oitti) was a Finnish composer, music critic, pianist, and organist. As a composer, Merikanto was primarily a miniaturist, and includes songs and piano pieces (he wrote over 100 of each). Of the latter, he is best remembered for: ''Summer Evening Waltz'' (, Op. 1), ''Romance'' (, Op. 12), ''Summer Evening Idyll'' (, Op. 16/2), (Op. 33), and ''Idyll'' (Op. 73/1). Merikanto also wrote three operas: ''The Maiden of the North'' (, 1898), which retains a degree of historical significance as the first opera composed to a Finnish libretto; ''The Death of Elina'' (, 1910); and ''Regina von Emmeritz'' (1920). However, Merikanto's operas have entered neither the domestic nor the international repertoires. Kainuu
Kainuu ( sv, Kajanaland) is one of the 19 regions of Finland (''maakunta'' / ''landskap''). Kainuu borders the regions of North Ostrobothnia, North Savo and North Karelia. In the east, it also borders Russia (Republic of Karelia). Culturally Kainuu is part of larger Eastern-Finnish cultural heritage. The dialect of Kainuu resembles Savonian and Karelian dialects. SiSU (SiSU information structuring universe or Structured information, serialized units), is a Unix command line-oriented framework for document structuring, publishing and search. Usage Using markup applied to a document, or a collection of documents, SiSU can produce plain text, HTML, XHTML, EPUB, XML, OpenDocument, LaTeX or PDF files, and populate an SQL database. Kainuu People
Kainuu people (Finnish: ''kainuulaiset'') are Eastern Finnish inhabitants of the Kainuu region. Kainuu was settled by Savonians in the 16th century but historically belonged to Ostrobothnia County and Oulu Province. This allowed for a separate Kainuu identity to emerge in the late 19th century. Kainuu people speak the Kainuu dialect, which is a part of the Savonian dialects of Finnish. Kainuu people are sometimes considered to be Savonians. However, Kainuu people themselves do not think so but have a separate Kainuu identity. Most Kainuu people are Lutherans.Helo (2006:24).
