Nunziatina, Todi
The Nunziatina is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic oratory or small church at the north end of Via del Seminario, near the Todi Cathedral, in the center of Todi, province of Perugia, region of Umbria, Italy. History The oratory was founded in the 17th century through a gift of land by the Bishop Angelo Cesi, to a local confraternity of the Santissima Annunziata, which had been active since the 13th-century. The confraternity was putatively involved in ministering to passing pilgrims. Over the years, the prayer hall was enriched with frescoes and paintings. Putatively a former paneled ceiling was destroyed in a fire in 1700. Among the paintings present now are works by Andrea Polinori, including a 1627 depiction of Jacopone da Todi Jacopone da Todi, O.F.M. Baroque Art
The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. In the territories of the Spanish and Portuguese empires including the Iberian Peninsula it continued, together with new styles, until the first decade of the 19th century. It followed Renaissance art and Mannerism and preceded the Rococo (in the past often referred to as "late Baroque") and Neoclassical styles. It was encouraged by the Catholic Church as a means to counter the simplicity and austerity of Protestant architecture, art, and music, though Lutheran Baroque art developed in parts of Europe as well. The Baroque style used contrast, movement, exuberant detail, deep colour, grandeur, and surprise to achieve a sense of awe. Todi
Todi () is a town and ''comune'' (municipality) of the province of Perugia (region of Umbria) in central Italy. It is perched on a tall two-crested hill overlooking the east bank of the river Tiber, commanding distant views in every direction. In the 1990s, Richard S. Levine, a professor of Architecture at the University of Kentucky, included Todi in academic design exercises aimed at conceiving hypothetical improvements to the city and presented its results in a conference titled "The Sustainable City of the Past and the Sustainable City of the Future". As a result, the Italian press incorrectly reported on Todi as ''the world's most livable city''. Andrea Polinori (1586 – 1648) was an Italians, Italian painter active in a Baroque art, Baroque-style mainly in his native city of Todi in Umbria. Biography He was born in Todi. He spent a formative period circa 1615 in Rome. He is described as leading an intemperate life. His brother, Giovanni Antonio Polinori, was also a painter. Jacopone Da Todi
Jacopone da Todi, O.F.M. (ca. 1230 – 25 December 1306) was an Italian Franciscan friar from Umbria. He wrote several ''laude'' (songs in praise of the Lord) in the local vernacular. He was an early pioneer in Italian theatre, being one of the earliest scholars who dramatised Gospel subjects. Life Born Jacopo dei Benedetti, he was a member of a noble family. He studied law in Bologna and became a successful lawyer. At some point in his late 20s, he married a young noblewoman, named Vanna according to some accounts, who was a pious and generous woman. Due to his reputation as a worldly and greedy man, she took it upon herself to mortify her flesh in atonement for his behavior. Not long after their wedding, Benedetti urged his wife to attend a public tournament. In the course of the spectacle, she was killed when part of the stand in which she was sitting gave way.
