November 1866 Clermont Colonial By-election
The Clermont colonial by-election, November 1866 was a by-election held on 13 November 1866 in the electoral district of Clermont for the Queensland Legislative Assembly. History On 18 August 1866, Sydney Davis, the member for Clermont, resigned. Roderick Travers won the resulting by-election on 11 September 1866. However, Travers declined to take the seat and resigned on 12 October 1866. A further by-election on 13 November 1866 was won by George Forbes. By-election
A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent dying or resigning, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, election or appointment to a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities. In some cases a vacancy may be filled without a by-election or the office may be left vacant. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Sydney Davis (Australian Politician)
Sydney Bevan Davis (1829–1884) was a pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Sydney Bevan Davis was born in Dorsetshire, England, in 1829, the second son of Lieutenant-Colonel John Davis, of the Dorsetshire Militia, who for many years was Master of Foxhounds for Queen Victoria. Sydney Davis was a lieutenant in his father's regiment. He was educated at the University of Oxford. He immigrated to Queensland in 1861 with considerable capital that he invested in a pastoral property at Peak Downs called ''Peak Vale Station'' and also had an interest in the ''Craven Downs Station''. Politics Under the Additional Members Act 1864, the seats of Clermont, Kennedy, Maryborough, Mitchell, Rockhampton and Warrego were created. Roderick Travers
Roderick Travers (9 May 1831 – 19 July 1894) was a sheep farmer and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Travers was born in Islington, London, and sailed on the ''Blackwall'' from Portsmouth to Australia in 1850. He returned to London in 1852 and did not return to Australia until 1862. He acquired and ran several different stations in New South Wales and Queensland until his return to London around 1889. He helped found the Central Queensland Meat Export Co. Ltd in Rockhampton in 1880. Political career After the resignation of Sydney Davis as the state member for Clermont in 1866, Travers was elected to take his place. He declined to take his seat in parliament believing that he did not have sufficient time at his disposal to permit his accepting the appointment and resigned a month later. George Forbes (Queensland Politician)
George Edward Forbes (1828 – 1881) was a Scots-born politician who served in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography George Forbes was born on 8 August 1828 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He settled in Australia in about 1849, becoming a prominent squatter before forming a partnership with John Balfour in 1854 in Colinton, the Brisbane Valley, buying the business in 1862. He returned to Scotland and, in 1868, married Louisa Lillias Trotter at St John's Episcopalian Church, Edinburgh, who was an artist and the daughter of an ancient Scottish family. Her father was Archibald Trotter of Dreghorn Castle of Midlothian in Edinburgh. They returned to Colinton after their marriage. Their daughter Mabel Christian Forbes married Sir Thomas Barnby Whitson who served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1929 to 1932. Mabel died in 1971.
