Notts Rangers Football Club was an English football club, founded in 1868 under the name Nottingham St James. They became Nottingham Rangers in 1880 and by 1886 were habitually referred to as Notts Rangers. History A founder member of the Midland Football League, Notts Rangers participated in the FA Cup in 1885–86 to 1889–90. The club's first FA Cup campaign ended in acrimony, with the Rangers' half-back Knight suspended for the season for insulting the umpire after the loss to Notts County. The club's best run in the Cup was in 1887–88, which also saw the club's best FA Cup win, 10-1 over Jardines before a crowd of 2,000. The club had previously recorded a 14–0 win over Castle Rovers in the fourth round of the Notts Cup in 1885–86. Alf Shelton
Alfred Shelton (11 September 1865 – 24 July 1923) was an English international footballer, who played as a left half. His brother Charles was also a professional footballer. Born in Nottingham, Shelton played for Notts Rangers, Notts County, Loughborough and Ilkeston Town, and earned six caps for England between 1889 and 1892. Early career Alf Shelton was one of three brothers – Harry and Charlie Shelton the others – who did so much for Nottingham football. Alf was educated at St. Nicholas School, which he left to join Notts Rangers. He signed in 1884. When the club collapsed in 1888 he, along with other members, threw in their lot with "The Magpies", the nickname for Notts County. He signed in August 1888. A wing half with exceptional stamina, he was a difficult player to get past. He also excelled in heading, often getting his head in the way of goal-bound shots. Fred Geary (23 January 1868 – 8 January 1955) was an English professional footballer who played at centre forward for Everton in the 1890s, and made two appearances for England, scoring a hat-trick on his debut. At Everton, he was a prolific goal-scorer, with 86 goals in 99 appearances, helping them to win the Football League championship for the first time in 1890–91. He was "the first Everton centre-forward to capture the imagination of their supporters" and "in his era he was as important to Everton as Dixie Dean was some years later". Charles Shelton (22 January 1864 – 18 September 1955) was an England international footballer who played as a left half. His brother Alf also played football for England. Career Born in Nottingham, Shelton played for Notts Rangers and Notts County, and earned one cap for England in 1888. Charles Shelton signed for Notts County in 1887.
