Not For Sale (film)
''Not for Sale'' is a 1924 British silent comedy film directed by W. P. Kellino and starring Mary Odette, Ian Hunter and Gladys Hamer. It was made at Cricklewood Studios by Stoll Pictures, and based on a novel by Monica Ewer. The film's sets were designed by the art director Walter Murton. It is still extant, unlike many silent films of the era which are now considered lost. Plot After being disinherited by his father due to his extravagant lifestyle, Lord Bering's acquisitive society fiancée breaks off the engagement. He goes to live in a boarding house in Bloomsbury under an assumed name and gets a job as a chauffeur. His experiences open his eyes to how the other half live, and he befriends Annie Armstrong the owner of the boarding house and her younger brother. When he is wrongly accused of stealing by his employer, he decides to leave London. While hop-picking in Kent he discovers that he has come into a large sum of money. Lydia Hayward
Lydia Hayward (1879-1945) was a British screenwriter and actress who worked on over 30 screenplays between 1920 and 1942. Chauffeur
A chauffeur is a person employed to drive a passenger motor vehicle, especially a luxury vehicle such as a large sedan or limousine. Originally, such drivers were often personal employees of the vehicle owner, but this has changed to specialist chauffeur service companies or individual drivers that provide both driver and vehicle for hire. Some service companies merely provide the driver. History The term ''chauffeur'' comes from the French term for stoker because the earliest automobiles, like their railroad and sea vessel counterparts, were steam-powered and required the driver to stoke the engine. Early petrol/gasoline-powered motor cars, before the advent of electric ignition, were ignited by 'hot tubes' in the cylinder head which had to be pre-heated before the engine would start. British Comedy Films
British comedy films are comedy films produced in the United Kingdom. In the early 1930s, film adaptations of stage farces were popular. Moore Marriott
George Thomas Moore Marriott (14 September 1885 – 11 December 1949) was an English character actor best remembered for the series of films he made with Will Hay. His first appearance with Hay was in the film '' Dandy Dick'' (1935), but he was a significant supporting performer in Hay's films from 1936 to 1940, and while he starred with Hay during this period he played a character called "Harbottle" that was based on a character Marriott usually played. His character Harbottle was originally created by Hay when he used the character in his "The fourth form at St. Michael's" sketches in the 1920s. Career Marriott was born at Alpha Place, Yiewsley, Middlesex, on 14 September 1885, the son of George Matthew Marriott (1859–1940), who was then a commercial traveller, and his wife, Edith Rousby, née Coleman (1864–1946). Jack Trevor
Anthony Cedric Sebastian Steane (14 December 1893 – 19 December 1976), known by the stage name Jack Trevor, was a British film actor of the silent and early sound era. Based in Weimar (and later Nazi) Germany, he acted in 67 films between 1922 and 1943. He was later convicted by the Central Criminal Court of collaboration for appearing in multiple propaganda films of the Nazi regime, but his sentence was overturned on the basis that he'd only worked under duress. Early life and military service Trevor was born Anthony Cedric Sebastian Steane in London in 1893, to upper-class parents. He studied at New College, Oxford, and was drafted into the British Army, where he was posted to the Manchester Regiment. By 1915, he was posted to Gallipoli and later France as an acting Second Lieutenant. He was wounded in action in 1916, and was for a time invalidated out of service.
