Northlands (organization)
Edmonton Northlands, operating as Northlands, was a non-profit volunteer organization in Edmonton, Alberta. The organization owned exhibition grounds in northeast Edmonton collectively known as the Edmonton Northlands, which included venues such as the Northlands Park raceway, the Edmonton Expo Centre, and Rexall Place–the former home of the Edmonton Oilers. The organization also hosted the annual exhibition K-Days, and the agricultural show Farmfair International. Northlands began to decline in the 2010s after the construction of a new downtown arena—Rogers Place—which is operated by the Oilers, and took on most of the major indoor events that had previously been held at Rexall Place. The organization had also taken out a $48 million loan to cover a recent expansion of the Expo Centre. Northlands Agricom
The Edmonton Expo Centre, formerly the Northlands AgriCom and also known as the Edmonton Exposition and Conference Centre is a multi-purpose convention centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Operated by Explore Edmonton on behalf of the City of Edmonton, it is located in Edmonton's Montrose neighbourhood, across the street from the (now closed) Northlands Coliseum. Northlands Coliseum
Northlands Coliseum is a now-unused indoor arena located in Edmonton, Alberta, situated on the north side of Northlands. It was used for sports events and concerts, and was home to the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and National Hockey League (NHL), and the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The arena opened in 1974, and was later known as Edmonton Coliseum, Skyreach Centre, and Rexall Place, before returning to the Northlands Coliseum name in summer 2016. The arena hosted the 1981 and 1984 Canada Cup hockey tournaments, the 1978 Commonwealth Games, seven Stanley Cup finals (Oilers losses in 1983 and 2006, and Oilers victories in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990), many other hockey events, along with other sporting events and major concerts. Northlands Park was the "Alberta A circuit" horse racing track at Northlands in Edmonton, Alberta. The horse racing season generally consisted of a spring harness (Standardbred) meet from February/March, a Thoroughbred meet from May/June to September/October and a fall harness meet to mid-December. Northlands Park (formerly Northlands Spectrum) was the building name for the grandstand. There were three dining areas on the second floor. Colours was the main dining room overlooking the race track and had a seating capacity of 700. Northlands Park is a park in Basildon, Essex, England. History of the park Basildon Northlands Park was created by Basildon Development Corporation (BDC) in the 1970s on the former Felmore Farm. During construction the land was landscaped with two lakes and hills. The lakes are three feet deep and cover an area of eight acres. They were made to catch floodwater from the nearby developments at Fryerns and Chalvedon. The Felmore Farm house became derelict and was demolished in the 1980s. Facilities The facilities include a cafe, walking, picnicking, fishing lakes, flower gardens, a children's playground, a skatepark and a multi-use sports area. The County Ground in Southampton, England was a cricket and football ground. It was the home of Hampshire County Cricket Club from the 1885 English cricket season until the 2000 English cricket season. The ground also served as the home ground for Southampton Football Club from 1896 to 1898. Northlands School is a co-educational, non-denominational bilingual school with campuses in Olivos, Buenos Aires Province, Olivos and Nordelta, Argentina. History Northlands School was founded in 1920 by two English women, Winifred May Brightman and Muriel Ivy Slater, who had come to Argentina as governesses. Northlands opened with 16 students, both boys and girls, but three years later it stopped taking boys. Subsequently, it became a leading girls' boarding and day school popular with the diplomatic corps. In the 1990s the school became co-educational. Miss Brightman was at the head of the School for forty years, until 1961, when she retired. She had been awarded the OBE in 1953 for services to education.
