Weedsport, New York
Weedsport is a village in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. The name is from Elihu and Edward Weed, merchants who helped found the village. Weedsport is in the town of Brutus, west of Syracuse. It was a port on the Erie Canal. Whitford's Airport is north of the village in the town of Cato. History Weedsport was within the Central New York Military Tract. The village was originally named "Weed's Basin" because the town had a basin (boat turnaround) during the Erie Canal era. The name was then changed to Weedsport. The village was incorporated in 1831. Weedsport Elementary School was built in 1908. Renovations to the elementary school in 1986 added more classrooms, a gymnasium, and a homemaking facility. Weedsport Junior/Senior High School was built in 1957 and later expanded in 1967 and 2005. Mike McLaughlin
Michael McLaughlin (born October 6, 1956) is an American former professional stock car racing driver. Nicknamed Magic Shoes, McLaughlin was a perennial fan favorite, winning the Most Popular Driver award in 1997. He also scored several wins and top-5 points finishes in the points standings in the NASCAR Busch Series. Early career McLaughlin grew up in New York State and began his professional career at a later stage than most other drivers, competing in his first race at age 20 in a dirt modified he built. He then ran regularly at his home track, Maple Grove Speedway, before moving up into the DIRT Modified series. Jessica L. Friesen ( née Zemken, born May 5, 1986) is an American professional dirt track racing driver. She primarily competes in sprint car racing, and has raced in series like the All Star Circuit of Champions and World of Outlaws. She will also compete part-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2023, driving either the No. 62 or a third Toyota Tundra truck for her family team, Halmar Friesen Racing. Brewerton Speedway
Brewerton Speedway is a 1/3rd mile D-shaped dirt oval raceway in Brewerton, New York. It is considered one of the oldest jewels of the robust Central New York racing scene. History The Brewerton Speedway was built as a ¼ mile clay racetrack in 1949 by Vere Bradbury and Don Georgia, who sold it to Al Richardson. The first event was a dirt track midget car race. The track was paved in 1956, and the current 1/3 mile dirt oval opened in 1973. Richardson remained owner until 1965, after which the racetrack went through a series of owners and promoters, as well as several years of inactivity. In 1994, Harvey, Joan, and David Fink purchased the track. Since 2009, the track, along with the Fulton Speedway, has been owned by John and Laura Wight. Can-Am Speedway
Can-Am Speedway is a -mile dirt oval raceway located in La Fargeville, Town of Orleans, New York. Located just a few miles from the Thousand Islands on New York State Route 411, it draws competitors and fans from both sides of the Canada–United States border. History The Can-Am Speedway was built in 1974 by an Evans Mills, NY real estate broker, Leslie W. Brown. The track lasted one year under this ownership and Brown filed for bankruptcy. Early in 1975, a group of Watertown Speedway investors purchased the track, that consisted of Bob Thurston Sr., Douglas Atkinson, and Thomas Coughlin. This partnership lasted for several seasons. Larry Nuber
Larry Nuber (November 29, 1948 – June 8, 2000) was an American auto racing announcer, best known for his work on ESPN broadcasts of NASCAR, CART and Formula One races in the 1980s. Before ESPN Nuber graduated from Ohio State University and was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974. In the late 1970s, he was an advertising account executive for WTHR Channel 13 in Indianapolis, IN. During his tenure at WTHR, Nuber met sportscaster Paul Page, which led to a career in broadcasting. Announcing career Nuber joined the new ESPN network in 1979 for their first motor sports telecast. Nuber and Bob Jenkins called the race, a USAC event in Salem, IN. Dick Berggren
Richard Berggren (born May 27, 1942) is a motorsports announcer and magazine editor from Manchester, Connecticut in the United States. He is commonly seen wearing a trademark flat cap. Academia Berggren described himself as "the worst student" in high school. No college accepted him, so he accepted a job as an office boy at United Aircraft. He later was accepted at Quinnipiac College. Berggren transferred to Southern Connecticut State University, where his girlfriend Kathy was a student. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1965. Berggren earned a doctorate in psychology from Tufts University in 1970. His dissertation focused on sleep deprivation. He was a psychology professor at Emmanuel College in Boston for nine years. Watertown Speedway was a 1/2 mile dirt oval raceway located at the Jefferson County fairgrounds in Watertown, New York. Langhorne Speedway
Langhorne Speedway was an automobile racetrack in Middletown Township, Bucks County, near the borough of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, a northern suburb of Philadelphia. According to the book ''Langhorne! No Man's Land'' by L. Spencer Riggs: "With all other courses up to that time being fairground horse tracks, Langhorne was the first ne-ile dirt track built specifically for cars". Weedsport Speedway
Weedsport Speedway, formerly known as Cayuga County Fair Speedway, is a 3/8 mile oval dirt racetrack located on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds in Weedsport, New York. Auto racing In the early 1950s Stanley Dudzinski carved a one-third mile oval into a berry patch to practice driving his race car. He and his wife Irene further developed the facility and in 1955 the gates were opened for the first competitive event. Glenn Donnelly (originally with Ken Ermiger) purchased the race track in 1970, increasing the clay oval to 3/8 mile, and creating the flagship for the Super DIRTcar Series. In 2004, Donnelly sold the race track to the World Racing Group for $4.3 million.
