North Of Superior Junior B Hockey League
The North of Superior Junior B Hockey League (NSHL) is a defunct Junior ice hockey league in Ontario, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The league used to be a part of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. History The North of Superior Junior B Hockey League was the brain-child of Chris Joubert of Terrace Bay, Ontario. He served as president of the NSHL for its first two years before stepping down due to work commitments. Claude Montfort of Marathon, Ontario took over after him. The league occupied most of the same zone as the old International Junior B Hockey League. The first season, 1996–97, the league consisted of the Aguasabon River Rats, Longlac Merchants, Marathon Renegades, and Wawa Travellers. In 1997, the Hearst Elans, who played previously under Hockey Quebec, joined the league and made an instant impact. Northwestern Ontario
Northwestern Ontario is a secondary region of Northern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario which lies north and west of Lake Superior and west of Hudson Bay and James Bay. It includes most of subarctic Ontario. Its western boundary is the Canadian province of Manitoba, which disputed Ontario's claim to the western part of the region. Wawa Travellers
The Wawa Travellers were a Junior "B" team based out of Wawa, Ontario. They played in the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League. History The Travellers played in all eight of the NSHL's seasons. After a slow start, the team moved through the standings and in their final two seasons they topped the league, winning the league championship, in both 2002-03 and 2003-04. Despite two championships, the Travellers finished their story in 2004 with a 4-straight-losses to the Thunder Bay Northern Hawks of Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League in the Northern Ontario Regional Junior B Hockey Championship. After the 2003-04 season, the Thessalon Flyers and Aguasabon River Rats left the NSHL. With only the Travellers and the Marathon Renegades left in the league, it folded. Thessalon
Thessalon is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located at the junction of Highway 17 and Highway 129 on the north shore of Lake Huron. It is surrounded by, but not part of, the municipality of Huron Shores, and is part of Algoma District. The main industries are timber and tourism. The town is a popular retirement community. It is the administrative headquarters of the Thessalon First Nation an Ojibwe First Nations with a reserve, Thessalon 12. History Appears on early maps as Tessalon (Galinée, 1670), and later as Pointe aux Thessalons (Bellin, 1775). A corruption of an earlier Amerindian descriptive Neyashewun, meaning "a point of land". The region was first surveyed in 1869. The survey was done to determine if the area could support a viable lumber industry. Thessalon Flyers
The Thessalon Flyers were a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Thessalon, Ontario, Canada. Over its history, this defunct hockey team was a part of the International Junior B Hockey League, followed by the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, and lastly the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League. History The North Shore Stars joined the International Junior B Hockey League in 1967 when the Elliot Lake Vikings went on hiatus. In 1972, they changed their name to the Thessalon North Stars and a year later to the Flyers. The Flyers played in 3 seasons in the NOJHL starting in 1987. The addition of the Flyers helped break the league from an interlocking schedule with the OHA Jr. "A" League, which otherwise would have probably fatally crippled the NOJHL. The Northern Wildcats were a Canadian Junior ice hockey team based out of Longlac, Ontario. Hearst, Ontario
Hearst is a town in the district of Cochrane, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Mattawishkwia River in Northern Ontario, approximately west of Kapuskasing, approximately east of Thunder Bay along Highway 11. Terrace Bay is a township in Thunder Bay District in northern Ontario, Canada, located on the north shore of Lake Superior east of Thunder Bay along Ontario Highway 17, Highway 17. The name originates from a series of lake Terrace (geology), terraces formed as the water level in Lake Superior lowered following the Last Glacial Period, latest ice age. The Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) is a junior A ice hockey league and a member of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) and Hockey Canada. The league operates in the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. states of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Winners of the SIJHL playoffs compete for the Dudley Hewitt Cup against the winners of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. Northwestern Ontario Regional Junior B Hockey Championship
The William Ryan Trophy is a Canadian ice hockey series to determine the Northwestern Ontario seed of the Keystone Cup - the Western Canada Junior "B" Hockey championship. Hockey Northwestern Ontario sanctioned league winners play-off for the trophy. History From 1997 until 2004, the right to compete in the Keystone Cup was an epic battle between the champions of the Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League and the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League. After six championships competed for, each league had three Northwestern Ontario titles each, but in the last two years of competition the TBJBHL won both years. As the NSHL folded in 2004, the TBJBHL won the eight-year series five championships to three. Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League
The Lakehead Junior Hockey League is a Canadian Junior ice hockey league in Northwestern Ontario, sanctioned by Hockey Northwestern Ontario and Hockey Canada. An earlier edition of this league existed in the 1970s. The Thunder Bay-based league has produced three Keystone Cup Western Canada Junior "B" champion and six Brewers Cup Western Canada Junior "C" champions. History Formerly referred to as the Thunder Bay Junior B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League, the LJHL league has, in the past, mixed itself with Juvenile and Midget "AAA" teams in the Thunder Bay region for regular season games.
