The 48th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1883, to March 4, 1885, during the last two years of the administration of U.S. President Chester A. Arthur. Risden Tyler Bennett
Risden Tyler Bennett (June 18, 1840 – July 21, 1913) was a Democratic U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1883 and 1887. He was also an attorney and judge. Early life Bennett was born in Wadesboro, North Carolina. He was the twelfth and youngest child of Catherine Harris and Nevil Bennett, a farmer and primitive Baptist minister. His father died when Bennett was twelve–years–old. He attended common schools and the Gouldsfork Academy. He graduated from the Anson Institute in Wadesboro. He enrolled in the sophomore class of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when he was sixteen years old, but soon left over hazing and headed West where he saw the Rocky Mountains and lived with Native Americans. Wadesboro is a town in Anson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,049 at the 2020 census. The town was originally found in 1783 as New Town but changed by the North Carolina General Assembly to Wadesboro in 1787 to honor Colonel Thomas Wade, a native son, state legislator, and Revolutionary War commander of the Anson County Regiment. It is the county seat of Anson County. 1882 United States House Of Representatives Elections In North Carolina
The 1882 United States House of Representatives elections were held during President Chester A. Arthur's term. Arthur's Republican Party was badly defeated, losing its majority to the opposition Democratic Party after a campaign that focused on the resistance of Republican leaders to reforming the Spoils system under which government jobs were handed to supporters of winning candidates. After the election, Arthur agreed with the Democrats to pass the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, establishing a professional civil service. However, his actions were too late, as the image of the Republican Party as corrupt was already engrained in the minds of voters. This election also saw the decline of the pro-paper money Greenback Party, and the pick up of several Virginian seats by the Readjuster Party which promoted fiscal responsibility and shunned elitism, though the Virginia-based Readjuster Party all but disappeared following this election.
