Norman Walker (24 November 1907 – 5 November 1963) was an English bass singer, distinguished for his work in both opera and oratorio.The core data in this article is derived from Brook 1958, apart from those details signalled by other footnotes. Early development Walker was born into a musical family in Shaw, Lancashire, England. His father played trombone in an amateur brass band, and his mother was an amateur soprano. A choirboy in the parish church, he continued his musical studies when he went to work in a cotton mill on leaving school. By the age of fifteen and a half he already had a deep bass voice, which he used at the evening institute where he studied harmony. At the age of 17 he made his first public performance as a soloist in a concert programme including Handel arias. Norman Stewart 'Snowy' Walker (1901 – 1977) was a South African international lawn bowler. Bowls career Walker who was born is Dundee in Scotland won three medals at the Commonwealth Games. In 1938 he won a rinks (fours) silver followed by the gold medal in the fours at the 1950 British Empire Games and in 1958 he won another silver medal in the fours at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He competed in the first World Bowls Championship in Kyeemagh, New South Wales, Australia in 1966 and won a silver medal in the pairs with Tommy Press at the event. Norman Walker (dermatologist)
Sir Norman Purvis Walker FRCPE (2 August 1862, Dysart – 7 November 1942, Balerno) was a Scottish dermatologist, and physician-in-charge of the Skin Department at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He was also one of the first persons in Britain to benefit from the discovery of insulin as a treatment for diabetes. __TOC__ Education and early career He was born in the manse at Dysart (close to Kirkcaldy) the son of the local minister, Rev Walker. Norman Walker was educated at Edinburgh Academy, and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an MB CM in 1884, and an MD in 1888. In 1888, he produced a thesis entitled ‘Pleurisy: with clinical notes and remarks’. In 1883, Walker started in his first post, as resident physician to Claude Muirhead at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and for the next five years he was in general practice in Dalston, Cumberland.
