Norman Foster (rugby League)
Norman Foster (birth registered fourth ¼ 1907 – February 1999) was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and coached in the 1940s and 1950s. He played at representative level for England and Yorkshire, and at club level for Keighley (two spells), Halifax, Hull Kingston Rovers and Newcastle RLFC, as a , and coached at club level for Keighley ( A-Team Assistant Coach to Billy Watson), Prince-Smith & Stells ARLFC (see also Prince-Smith baronets) and Keighley Albion ARLFC. Settle, North Yorkshire
Settle is a market town and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is served by Settle railway station located near the town centre, and Giggleswick railway station which is a mile away. It is from Leeds Bradford Airport. The main road through Settle is the B6480, which links to the A65, connecting Settle to Leeds, Ilkley, Skipton and Kendal. The town had a population of 2,421 in the 2001 Census, increasing to 2,564 at the 2011 Census. History Settle is thought to have 7th-century Anglian origins, its name being the Angle word for settlement. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. Riddlesden
Riddlesden is a suburb of Keighley (historically a separate village) in the county of West Yorkshire, England and on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The village lies east of Keighley town centre and is on the B6265 road between Keighley and Bingley. The part of the village by the canal is at a height of above sea level. History Riddlesden is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to William the Conqueror and being in the Wapentake of Skyrack. The name of the village appears throughout history as ''Redlesden'' and as ''Redelesden'' and it derives from the name of a wooded vale (or farm) of ''Rœd'' or ''Redwulf''. The village was historically in the parish of Bingley, but it is currently in the civil parish of Keighley. There have been proposals in 2010 and 2012 for Riddlesden to have a separate parish which includes nearby Stockbridge and Sandbeds. 1945–46 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1945–46 Rugby Football League season was the 51st season of rugby league football. Season summary Wigan won their fifth Championship when they defeated Huddersfield 13-4 in the play-off final. They had also finished the regular season as the league leaders. The Challenge Cup Winners were Wakefield Trinity who defeated Wigan 13-12 in the final. Bramley, Broughton Rangers, Hull Kingston Rovers, Liverpool Stanley, Rochdale Hornets, Salford, Swinton, Warrington and Widnes returned following the Second World War. Workington Town also entered a team for the first time. Jim Sullivan of Wigan ended his career this season as the all-time record scorer of goals with 2,867. Wigan won the Lancashire League, and Wakefield Trinity won the Yorkshire League. A testimonial match or testimonial game, often referred to simply as a testimonial, is a practice in some sports, particularly in association football in the United Kingdom and South America, where a club has a match to honour a player for service to the club. These matches are always non-competitive.
