Nomads Rugby
The Toronto Nomads Rugby Club is one of Canada's oldest rugby clubs. The Toronto Nomads are one of six clubs that formed the Toronto Rugby Union and the Ontario Rugby Union in 1950. Training in downtown Toronto, the Toronto Nomads boast three senior men's teams, two senior women's and seven junior squads, running from minis to U18. The senior women's team currently plays in the Ontario Women's League, while the senior men's team currently play in the Marshall Championship, the senior division of Ontario Rugby Union. Nomads history Club founding In August 1950, Reverend Freddie Miller, along with an ad hoc Rugby Strategy Committee, began recruiting rugby players at the Canadian National Exhibition. Nomads
A nomad is a member of a community without fixed habitation who regularly moves to and from the same areas. Such groups include hunter-gatherers, pastoral nomads (owning livestock), tinkers and trader nomads. In the twentieth century, the population of nomadic pastoral tribes slowly decreased, reaching an estimated 30–40 million nomads in the world . Nomadic hunting and gathering—following seasonally available wild plants and game—is by far the oldest human subsistence method. Pastoralists raise herds of domesticated livestock, driving or accompanying them in patterns that normally avoid depleting pastures beyond their ability to recover. Nomadism is also a lifestyle adapted to infertile regions such as steppe, tundra, or ice and sand, where mobility is the most efficient strategy for exploiting scarce resources. Kelly Russell
Kelly Russell (born December 7, 1986) was a Canadian rugby union player, and is a coach for the sport. She captained at the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup and was named to the Dream Team. International career Russell has also featured in two Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2009 and 2013. Kelly and her younger sister Laura were both named in the 2014 World Cup squad. 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup
The 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup was the seventh edition of the Women's Rugby World Cup, and the sixth held in Europe. The World Cup Final took place on 17 August. All of the pool games for the World Cup took place at the Centre National du Rugby (CNR) in Marcoussis and Marcoussis Rugby Club with the French union adopting the concept of restricting the tournament to one or two locations as in the 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup in London. Marcoussis is about 20 miles south of Paris. The knockout stages of the tournament also saw matches played at the CNR in Marcoussis, with the semi-finals, Bronze Final and Final taking place at Stade Jean-Bouin in the French capital – home of Stade Français. Lucas Hammond (born November 14, 1993) is a Canadian rugby union player, in the sevens discipline. Hammond's parents are both Canadians who lived in South Africa, where Hammond was born. They decided to emigrate back to Canada to be closer to family. Laura Russell
Laura Russell (born November 10, 1988) is a Canadian rugby union player. Rugby career Laura and her sister Kelly, represented at the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup. They were also in the squad that toured New Zealand in June 2014. In 2016, she was named the Rugby Canada Senior Women's Player of the Year. She took over the captaincy of the national team from her sister Kelly Russell. Russell also represents the national women's sevens team on the Rugby Canada Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour Working Group which was established on July 17, 2020. In 2022, Laura married long term partner, Ray Barkwill. Barkwill also played for Rugby Canada from 2012-2019. The NAGs Players
The NAGs Players are an amateur theatre company based in Toronto, Ontario. The company was founded in 1976 by Nomads Rugby Club players. The company is active today putting on three annual shows, one of which is always a pantomime. History In 1976, a few Nomad rugby players were drinking at the Tranzac Club. Discussion moved on from the Nomads' latest performance on the pitch to acting and the plays they had done back home and the Nomads Acting Group (NAGs) was born. The Nomads put on their first performances of "Cupid is a Bum, Is a Bum, Is a Bum" and "Meet the Folks" on April Fools' Day, 1976 at the Tranzac. The plays were a huge success. So great in fact, the NAGs decided to continue putting on shows year after year.
