''No Frills'' is the sixth studio album by American singer Bette Midler, released on Atlantic Records in 1983. ''No Frills'' was Midler's first studio album in four years, following the movies '' The Rose'', '' Divine Madness!'' and ''Jinxed!''. The rock and new wave influenced album was produced by Chuck Plotkin, best known for his work with Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, and included three single releases; the ballad "All I Need to Know", a cover of Marshall Crenshaw's "You're My Favorite Waste of Time" and Midler's take on the Rolling Stones song "Beast of Burden". ''Jinxed!'' (also branded as ''Jinxed'' on promotional media) is a 1982 American comedy film starring Bette Midler, Rip Torn and Ken Wahl. The film was the last to be directed by Don Siegel, who suffered a heart attack during production. Sam Peckinpah directed some of the film, but without a screen credit. Plot Bonita Friml is a Las Vegas lounge singer whose husband Harold Benson is a cigar-smoking recreational gambler with a long winning streak. "You're My Favorite Waste of Time" (also known as "Favorite Waste of Time" and "My Favourite Waste of Time") is a song written and first released by American singer Marshall Crenshaw. His 1979 home demo of the song was released as the B-side of his 1982 hit " Someday, Someway" and is available on his compilations '' The 9 Volt Years'' and '' This Is Easy: The Best of Marshall Crenshaw''. Written by Crenshaw while in '' Beatlemania'', the song was inspired by the Hollies and featured tongue-in-cheek lyrics about his wife. The song, though originally a B-side, would later be covered by many artists, including Bette Midler, who had a minor hit with the song in Australia and the US in 1983, and Owen Paul, who reached number 3 in Britain with his rendition. Nicholas George Gilder (born 21 December 1951) is a British-Canadian musician who first came to prominence as the frontman for the glam rock band Sweeney Todd. He later had a successful solo career as a singer/songwriter. Biography Born in London, England, Gilder was raised in Vancouver, Canada. He began his career as front-man for the glam rock band Sweeney Todd, which later briefly featured a very young Bryan Adams. "Pink Cadillac" is a song by Bruce Springsteen released as the non-album B-side of " Dancing in the Dark" in 1984. The song received moderate airplay on album-oriented rock radio and appeared on the ''Billboard'' Top Tracks chart for 14 weeks, peaking at No. 27. The song was also a prominent concert number during Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. Tour. The song follows Prince's "Little Red Corvette" and Wilson Pickett's " Mustang Sally" in using automobile travel as a metaphor for sexual activity, in particular the lyric "I love you for your pink Cadillac", which was intended to be a veiled reference to a vagina. The Rose (soundtrack)
The Rose is the soundtrack to the feature film of the same name starring Bette Midler which was released in 1979. Background Midler performs all the songs on the album, with the exception of the instrumental "Camellia". Apart from the title track, the soundtrack was entirely recorded live and also features concert monologues, with Midler portraying the character The Rose, loosely based on blues singer Janis Joplin. The soundtrack was produced by Paul A. Rothchild, who in fact also had worked with Joplin on what was to become her final album before her death in 1970, entitled ''Pearl'' and released posthumously. Midler's portrayal of The Rose, which was her acting debut, earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 1980 and became the start of her career in movies. ''Thighs and Whispers'' is the fifth studio album by American singer Bette Midler. Released in 1979, the album reached #65 on the ''Billboard'' Pop Albums chart. Production and release The album was largely disco-influenced. It saw Midler reunite with producer Arif Mardin and includes Jerry Ragovoy's "My Knight in Black Leather", a minor dance-floor hit that peaked at #70 on the US dance charts. "Married Men", "Hang on in There Baby" and "My Knight in Black Leather", released at the height of the disco era, were all issued as extended mixes on 12-inch singles.
