Lean-burn refers to the burning of fuel with an excess of air in an internal combustion engine. In lean-burn engines the air:fuel ratio may be as lean as 65:1 (by mass). The air / fuel ratio needed to stoichiometrically combust gasoline, by contrast, is 14.64:1. The excess of air in a lean-burn engine emits far less hydrocarbons. High air–fuel ratios can also be used to reduce losses caused by other engine power management systems such as throttling losses. Principle A lean burn mode is a way to reduce throttling losses. An engine in a typical vehicle is sized for providing the power desired for acceleration, but must operate well below that point in normal steady-speed operation. A valve is a device or natural object that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. The GA16DE is an Inline-four engine made by Nissan. It is found in many Nissan models, like the Nissan Sunny (N14 and B14), the Nissan Almera (N15), and the Nissan Primera (P10, injection models, P11 & P11-144) 100NX. It is very similar to the Nissan GA engine#GA14DE, GA14DE, aside from a larger displacement. The GA16DE is a robust, reliable engine with a displacement of 1596cc. In North America it was used in the 1991-1999 Nissan Sentra, Sentra, Nissan 200SX, 200SX, and Nissan NX, NX models. Nissan Variable Timing control or Nissan Valve Timing Control System (commonly known as N-VTC, VTC, NVCS or NVTCS) is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Nissan. N-VTC was first introduced in 1987 on the VG30DE and VG20DET engine. N-VTC varies valve timing by rotating the affected camshaft relative to the sprocket; valve lift and duration are not altered. This rotation is achieved when an electric solenoid, controlled by the car's ECU, allows pressurized engine oil to flow into and through the cam and into a slave mechanism, axially advancing camshaft timing relative to the sprocket.
