Nights Of Princes (novel)
''Princes of the Night'' (French: ''Nuits de princes'') is a novel by the writer Joseph Kessel which was originally published in 1927. It is set amongst the community of White Russian exiles in Paris. Adaptations The novel has been made into films on three occasions. A 1930 adaptation directed by Marcel L'Herbier and starring Gina Manès. This was remade in 1938 by Vladimir Strizhevsky with Käthe von Nagy in the lead role. Joseph Kessel
Joseph Kessel (10 February 1898 – 23 July 1979), also known as "Jef", was a French journalist and novelist. He was a member of the Académie française and Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour. Biography Kessel was born to a Argentine Jews, Jewish family in Villa Clara, Entre Ríos, Villa Clara, Entre Ríos Province, Entre Ríos, Argentina, because of the constant journeys of his father, a Lithuanian Jews, Litvak physician. From 1905 to 1908, Joseph Kessel lived the first years of his childhood in Orenburg, Russia, before the family moved to France in 1908. He studied in ''lycée Masséna'', Nice and lycée Louis-le-Grand, Paris and took part in the First World War as an aviator. ''After Midnight'' (German: ''Ab Mitternacht'') is a 1938 French-German drama film directed by Carl Hoffmann and starring Gina Falckenberg, Peter Voß and René Deltgen.Goble p.661 It was shot as a German-language version of the French film '' Nights of Princes'', produced as a co-production between the French subsidiary of Tobis Film and the producer Joseph N. Gina Manès (born Blanche Moulin; 7 April 1893 – 6 September 1989) was a French film actress and a major star of French silent cinema. After an early appearance in a Louis Feuillade film, she had significant roles in films of Germaine Dulac and Jean Epstein, including ''Cœur fidèle''. Career In Abel Gance's ''Napoléon (1927 film), Napoléon'', she took the part of Joséphine de Beauharnais, and then played the title role in Jacques Feyder's ''Thérèse Raquin (1928 film), Thérèse Raquin''. She made the transition to sound films but during the 1930s her popularity faded, and periods of residence in Morocco took her further from the public eye.
