Nigerian Body Of Benchers
The Nigerian Body of Benchers is a professional body concerned with the admission of successful candidates at the Nigerian Law School Bar Final Examination into the Legal Proffession. Members of the body are called ''Benchers''. The body also regulate the call of graduate of law school to the Nigerian Bar as well as the regulation of the legal profession in Nigeria. Principal officers The current Chairman of the body is Chief Wole Olanipekun, OFR, SAN who succeeded Hon. Wole Olanipekun
Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, OFR (18 November 1951) is a Nigerian Lawyer and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Early life A native of Ikere-Ekiti, he attended Amoye Grammar School in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State southwestern Nigeria but obtained the West Africa School Certificate at Ilesa Grammar before he proceeded to the University of Lagos, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Law. Professional career He was Called to the bar in July 1976 after he graduated from the Nigerian Law School and subsequently attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in July 1991, the same year in which he was appointed as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State and served in that capacity for two years. Justice Ishaq Usman Bello (born 5 January 1956) is a Nigerian jurist, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and Nigeria's nominated candidate for the 2020 judicial elections of the International Criminal Court based in The Hague, Netherlands. He is better known for his effort towards decongesting several prisons, now known as correctional facilities, in Nigeria. Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a title that may be conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria of not less than ten years' standing and who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession. It is the equivalent of the rank of Queen's Counsel in the United Kingdom, from which Nigeria became History of Nigeria#Independence, independent in 1960 (History of Nigeria#First Republic, Republic 1963), as well as in South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Canada (except Ontario and Quebec). Mudiaga Odje
Mudiaga Odje (25 September 1923 – 9 December 2005) was a Nigerian attorney. He was born in Evwreni. He helped shape both the constitutional and legal systems of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was the lead counsel in the first successful impeachment of a sitting governor in Nigeria. He was also one of the only lawyers to have persuaded the Supreme Court of Nigeria to overrule itself on a previous decision.
