Nieuwmarkt Metro Station
Nieuwmarkt is an underground metro station in the city centre of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Served by metro lines 51, 53 and 54 of the Amsterdam Metro, the station was constructed by sinking caissons with a length of . This construction method resulted in the demolition of parts of the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood and was met with protests. Despite the protests, destruction of the houses above the area started in December 1974. Construction on the station itself began in the summer of 1975. Nieuwmarkt has an island platform of and two halls with a total of three entrances and was opened to the public on 11 October 1980. There was a renovation project in 2011 and another one in 2018. Post–2012, residents have complained about vibrations from the tunnel when a metro passed by. The five artworks found throughout the station refer to the protests against the metro at the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood. In 2020, the station was deemed to be not safe enough in case of a fire. Nieuwmarkt
Nieuwmarkt (; en, New Market) is a square in the centre of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The surrounding area is known as the Lastage neighborhood. It is situated in the borough of Amsterdam-Centrum. The square is considered part of Amsterdam's Chinatown, next to the De Wallen (Red Light District). There are over 20 cafés and coffeeshops facing the square. There is a daily market on the square, as well as an organic food market on Saturdays and a market for antiques and books on Sundays in the summer months. The Nieuwmarkt is dominated by a building known as the Waag, originally a gate in the Medieval city walls but converted into a weighing house after the walls were demolished in the 17th century. The square was created when the canals around the Waag were filled in 1614, and was used as a marketplace (hence the name). Prins Hendrikkade (Dutch language, Dutch for "Prince Henry's Quay") is a major street in the centre of Amsterdam. It passes Amsterdam Centraal station, Amsterdam Central Station, intersects the Damrak at the mouth of the Amstel river, and forms the southern end of the IJtunnel across the IJ (bay), IJ bay. The street formed the northern edge and outer harbour of the city until the 19th century. Westwijk is a tram stop serving the neighborhood of ''Westwijk'' in the city of Amstelveen, Netherlands. It is the southern terminus of tram line 25, dubbed the Amsteltram before it received its line number. It opened officially on 13 December 2020, unofficially 4 days earlier on 9 December. Amsterdam Zuid ("Amsterdam South") is a railway station situated in the borough of Amsterdam-Zuid in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Amstelveen () is a municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands with a population of 92.353 as of 2022. It is a suburban part of the Amsterdam metropolitan area.
