New Amsterdam
New Amsterdam ( nl, Nieuw Amsterdam, or ) was a 17th-century Dutch settlement established at the southern tip of Manhattan Island that served as the seat of the colonial government in New Netherland. The initial trading ''factory'' gave rise to the settlement around Fort Amsterdam. The fort was situated on the strategic southern tip of the island of Manhattan and was meant to defend the fur trade operations of the Dutch West India Company in the North River (Hudson River). In 1624, it became a provincial extension of the Dutch Republic and was designated as the capital of the province in 1625. By 1655, the population of New Netherland had grown to 2,000 people, with 1,500 living in New Amsterdam. By 1664, the population of New Netherland had risen to almost 9,000 people, 2,500 of whom lived in New Amsterdam, 1,000 lived near Fort Orange, and the remainder in other towns and villages. ''The Boy with No Name'' is the fifth studio album by Scottish rock band Travis. The album was released on 7 May 2007 through Epic Records. This is Travis first album in which other members contributed to songwriting, rather than the frontman Fran Healy, who was the sole songwriter across their past four albums. The album sold over 442,900 copies worldwide. Background The name of the album came about when lead singer Fran Healy and his partner Nora were deciding on a name for their newly born son. During this time, he sent a photo of his son to a friend by email and labeled the photo "The Boy with No Name". Healy revealed this on The Chris Moyles Show during an interview. New Amsterdam Football Club is an American professional soccer club based in Hempstead, New York. The club competes in the National Independent Soccer Association, the third tier of American soccer. MS ''Nieuw Amsterdam'' is a sailing for Holland America Line. The 81st ship to enter Holland America's fleet, she is the fourth ship to bear the name ''Nieuw Amsterdam'' in the line's history. Service history ''Nieuw Amsterdam'' was laid down on 15 July 2008, launched on 30 October 2009 and completed on 30 June 2010. The ship was christened by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands in Venice, Italy on 4 July 2010 before embarking on its maiden voyage from Venice on 5 July 2010. On 10 October 2017, ''Nieuw Amsterdam'' was driven ashore at Santa Cruz Huatulco, Mexico. Strong winds blew her from her mooring, snapping her lines. MS ''Marella Spirit'' was a cruise ship owned by Holland America Line and operated under charter by the United Kingdom-based Marella Cruises. She was built in 1983 at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in France for Holland America Line as MS ''Nieuw Amsterdam''. Between 2000 and 2001 she sailed for United States Lines, a subsidiary of American Classic Voyages, as MS ''Patriot''. Anthony van Diemen (also ''Antonie'', ''Antonio'', ''Anton'', ''Antonius'') (1593 – 19 April 1645) was a Dutch colonial governor. Early life He was born in Culemborg in the Netherlands, the son of Meeus Anthonisz van Diemen and Christina Hoevenaar. In 1616, he moved to Amsterdam, in hope of improving his fortune as a merchant; in this he failed and was declared bankrupt. The New Amsterdams is an American band featuring Matthew Pryor of The Get Up Kids. In a certain sense, they represented the acoustic counter-project to The Get up Kids. The New Amsterdam Theatre is a Broadway theater on 214 West 42nd Street, at the southern end of Times Square, in the Theater District of Manhattan in New York City. One of the oldest surviving Broadway venues, the New Amsterdam was built from 1902 to 1903 to designs by Herts & Tallant. The theater is operated by Disney Theatrical Productions and has 1,702 seats across three levels.
