Nico Bakker
Albertus Nicolaas Johannes Bakker (3 January 1936 – 21 November 1969) was a Dutch painter. Bakker was born in Amsterdam and studied there at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. He was a pupil of Otto B. de Kat and Gé Röling. He became a teacher at the same institution in 1967 and taught Joost Barbiers. Bakker worked in Amsterdam and Nieuwkoop. In 1961, he won the Prix de Rome. He worked in Switzerland for a year where he met Walter Clénin and made gouaches. He also made gouache paintings of IJmuiden, Amsterdam and later Nieuwkoop. He made a series of gouaches for a topographical atlas of Amsterdam and of the Delta Works for the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management. Bakker died in 1969 in the hospital of Meppel, as a result of a car crash. He had a wife and four children. Gouache
Gouache (; ), body color, or opaque watercolor is a water-medium paint consisting of natural pigment, water, a binding agent (usually gum arabic or dextrin), and sometimes additional inert material. Gouache is designed to be opaque. Gouache has a considerable history, having been used for at least twelve centuries. It is used most consistently by commercial artists for posters, illustrations, comics, and other design work. Gouache is similar to watercolor in that it can be re-wetted and dried to a matte finish, and the paint can become infused into its paper support. It is similar to acrylic or oil paints in that it is normally used in an opaque painting style and it can form a superficial layer. Prix De Rome (Netherlands) Winners
Prix was an American power pop band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1975 by Tommy Hoehn and Jon Tiven. The group ended up primarily as a studio project. Its recordings were produced by Tiven along with former Big Star member Chris Bell, who also played guitar and sang backup vocals. Prix is also famous of Banjo playing. Alex Chilton also participated in the recordings, along with session drummer Hilly Michaels. Although the group generated some major record label interest—notably from Mercury Records and Columbia/CBS Records—it ultimately only released a double A-side single on Ork Records in 1977 and a single on Miracle Records in 1978. Its only live performance came at a CBS Records showcase in 1976. In 1977, just as Ork Records released the first single and booked the group at CBGB, Prix broke up due both to Hoehn's unwillingness to remain in New York and to creative differences. The Amsterdam City Archives ( nl, Stadsarchief Amsterdam) preserves documents pertaining to the history of Amsterdam and provides information about the city. With archives covering a shelf-length of about 50 kilometres, the Amsterdam City Archives is the largest municipal archive in the world. Delta Works
The Delta Works ( nl, Deltawerken) is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land around the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta from the sea. Constructed between 1954 and 1997, the works consist of dams, sluices, locks, dykes, levees, and storm surge barriers located in the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland. The aim of the dams, sluices, and storm surge barriers was to shorten the Dutch coastline, thus reducing the number of dikes that had to be raised.
