Newton–Okounkov Body
In algebraic geometry, a Newton–Okounkov body, also called an Okounkov body, is a convex body in Euclidean space associated to a divisor (or more generally a linear system) on a variety. The convex geometry of a Newton–Okounkov body encodes (asymptotic) information about the geometry of the variety and the divisor. It is a large generalization of the notion of the Newton polytope of a projective toric variety. It was introduced (in passing) by Andrei Okounkov in his papers in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Okounkov's construction relies on an earlier result of Askold Khovanskii on semigroups of lattice points. Later, Okounkov's construction was generalized and systematically developed in the papers of Robert Lazarsfeld and Mircea Mustață as well as Kiumars Kaveh and Khovanskii. Algebraic Geometry
Algebraic geometry is a branch of mathematics, classically studying zeros of multivariate polynomials. Modern algebraic geometry is based on the use of abstract algebraic techniques, mainly from commutative algebra, for solving geometrical problems about these sets of zeros. The fundamental objects of study in algebraic geometry are algebraic varieties, which are geometric manifestations of solutions of systems of polynomial equations. Examples of the most studied classes of algebraic varieties are: plane algebraic curves, which include lines, circles, parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas, cubic curves like elliptic curves, and quartic curves like lemniscates and Cassini ovals. A point of the plane belongs to an algebraic curve if its coordinates satisfy a given polynomial equation. Robert Lazarsfeld
Robert Kendall Lazarsfeld (born April 15, 1953) is an American mathematician, currently a professor at Stony Brook University. He was previously the Raymond L. Wilder Collegiate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan. He is the son of two sociologists, Paul Lazarsfeld and Patricia Kendall. His research focuses on algebraic geometry. During 2002–2009, Lazarsfeld was an editor at the '' Journal of the American Mathematical Society'' (Managing Editor, 2007–2009). In 2012–2013, he served as the Managing Editor of the ''Michigan Mathematical Journal''. Birkhäuser was a Swiss publisher founded in 1879 by Emil Birkhäuser. It was acquired by Springer Science+Business Media in 1985. The ''Annals of Mathematics'' is a mathematical journal published every two months by Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study. History The journal was established as ''The Analyst'' in 1874 and with Joel E. Hendricks as the founding editor-in-chief. Andrei Zelevinsky
Andrei Vladlenovich Zelevinsky (; 30 January 1953 – 10 April 2013) was a Russian-American mathematician who made important contributions to algebra, combinatorics, and representation theory, among other areas. Biography Zelevinsky graduated in 1969 from the Moscow Mathematical School No. 2. Askold Khovanskii
Askold Georgievich Khovanskii (russian: Аскольд Георгиевич Хованский; born 3 June 1947, Moscow) is a Russian and Canadian mathematician currently a professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto, Canada. His areas of research are algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, singularity theory, differential geometry and differential equations. His research is in the development of the theory of toric varieties and Newton polyhedra in algebraic geometry. He is also the inventor of the theory of fewnomials. He obtained his Ph.D. from Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow under the supervision of Vladimir Arnold. In his Ph.D. thesis, he developed a topological version of Galois theory. Toric Variety
In algebraic geometry, a toric variety or torus embedding is an algebraic variety containing an algebraic torus as an open dense subset, such that the action of the torus on itself extends to the whole variety. Some authors also require it to be normal. Toric varieties form an important and rich class of examples in algebraic geometry, which often provide a testing ground for theorems. The geometry of a toric variety is fully determined by the combinatorics of its associated fan, which often makes computations far more tractable. For a certain special, but still quite general class of toric varieties, this information is also encoded in a polytope, which creates a powerful connection of the subject with convex geometry.
