Newton Phillips Steacy
Newton Phillips Steacy (October 30, 1896 – July 1969) was a political figure in British Columbia. He represented North Vancouver in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1956 to 1960 as a Social Credit member. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, the son of A.R. Steacy and Frances A. Phillips. In 1921, Steacy married Ruth J. Clements. He was a local manager for Borden Co. Ltd. (a milk and dairy business). Steacy served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Agriculture. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1960. After leaving politics, Steacy served as trade commissioner for British Columbia in San Francisco. North Vancouver (provincial Electoral District)
North Vancouver was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It first appeared on the hustings in 1916 and at the time of its creation included West Vancouver as well as North Vancouver. Prior to its creation the North Shore had been part of the Vancouver riding.. The North Vancouver riding last appeared in the election of 1963, after which it was partitioned into North Vancouver-Capilano, North Vancouver-Seymour, and West Vancouver-Howe Sound. British Columbia Social Credit Party
The British Columbia Social Credit Party, whose members are known as Socreds, was the governing provincial political party of British Columbia, Canada, for all but three years between the 1952 provincial election and the 1991 election. For four decades, the party dominated the British Columbian political scene, with the only break occurring between the 1972 and 1975 elections when the British Columbia New Democratic Party governed. Although founded as part of the Canadian social credit movement, promoting social credit policies of monetary reform, the BC Social Credit Party later discarded the ideology and became a political vehicle for fiscal conservatives and later social conservatives in British Columbia. The party essentially collapsed within one term of its 1991 defeat. Borden, Inc., was an American producer of food and beverage products, consumer products, and industrial products. At one time, the company was the largest U.S. producer of dairy and pasta products. Its food division, Borden Foods, was based in Columbus, Ohio, and focused primarily on pasta and pasta sauces, bakery products, snacks, processed cheese, jams and jellies, and ice cream. It was best known for its Borden Ice Cream, Meadow Gold milk, Creamette pasta, and Borden Condensed Milk brands.
