Newsbeat (Irish TV Series)
''Newsbeat'' was a Telefís Éireann television current and regional affairs programme presented by Frank Hall and broadcast in Ireland live on weekday evenings from 1964 until 1971. Background ''Newsbeat'' was created by Telefís Éireann as a replacement for the station's flagship current affairs programme ''Broadsheet''. The programme was originally broadcast live from Monday to Friday between 6:01pm and 6:40pm. It was the first television programme by Telefís Éireann to be jointly produced by the News and Programming divisions of the new station. Content and style The programme opened with a ten-minute summary of the news and, unlike ''Broadsheet'', concentrated on more off-beat and light-hearted regional filmed reports and unscripted interviews from around Ireland. Frank Hall (24 February 1921 – 21 September 1995) was an Irish broadcaster, journalist, satirist and film censor. He is best remembered for his satirical revue programme ''Hall's Pictorial Weekly''. Early life Born in Newry, County Down, Hall received little more than a primary education as he left school at the age of twelve to work in a local shop. Michael Ryan (born 1944) ( ga, Mícheál Ó Riain) is a former television broadcaster on Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). He used to present '' Nationwide'', which is broadcast on RTÉ One every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening. Mary Kennedy joined him as co-presenter in later years. Cathal O'Shannon (23 August 1928 – 22 October 2011)'' The Late Late Show'' (RTÉ 1), Friday, 12 January 2007. was an Irish journalist and television presenter. RTÉ One ( ga, RTÉ a hAon) is an Irish free-to-air flagship television channel owned and operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). It is the most-popular and most-watched television channel in the country and was launched as ''Telefís Éireann'' on 31 December 1961, it was renamed ''RTÉ'' in 1966, and it was renamed as RTÉ 1 upon the launch of RTÉ 2 in 1978. ''Broadsheet'' was a Telefís Éireann television current affairs programme presented by John O'Donoghue, Brian Cleeve, and Brian Farrell and broadcast in Ireland live on weekday evenings from 1962 to 1963. Cathal O'Shannon
Cathal O'Shannon (9 June 1890 – 4 October 1969) was an Irish politician, trade unionist and journalist. Early years Charles Francis Shannon was born in Randalstown, County Antrim, he was the third child of Charles and Alice Shannon. As a child the family moved to his mother's hometown of Draperstown, County Londonderry where his father worked for the railway line. Growing up, both his family and locality influenced his interest in trade unionism, the Irish language, and Irish Republicanism. He was educated at Draperstown national school and St Columb's College, Derry. It was at Columb's that he studied history as a subject and developed an interest in journalism. Following the death of his father he moved to Belfast where he began to train for the civil service. ''Hall's Pictorial Weekly'' was an Irish satirical television series broadcast on Raidió Teilifís Éireann from 1971 to 1980. Regarded as RTÉ's flagship comedy show, it featured satirical sketches on current news stories, politics and popular culture, as well as parody songs, comedy sketches, re-edited videos, cartoons and spoof television formats. The show was written, presented and edited by Frank Hall and featured a cast including Frank Kelly and Eamon Morrissey.
