Route 102 is a north–south highway along the northwestern corner of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. It connects the communities of Fox Harbour and Ship Harbour with the town of Dunville and Route 100 (Cape Shore Highway). Between Dunville and Fox Harbour, the road is known as Fox Harbour Road, and between Fox Harbour and Ship Harbour, it is known as Ship Harbour Road. Route description Route 102 begins at an intersection with Route 100 in downtown Dunville and heads north through neighbourhoods before leaving town and winding its through wooded areas, where it passes by the site of Villa Marie. The highway now passes through Fox Harbour before coming closer to the coastline and winding its through hilly terrain. Dunville is a neighborhood located in the Town of Placentia, in Canada. it was earlier called Northeast or North East Placentia. The name was formed from "Dunphy's Village" a part of Northeast Placentia. It is a community that makes up the north-eastern section of the Town of Placentia. It stretches approximately 8 km along the northern shore of the North-East Arm of Placentia Bay. The Post Office was established in 1895 and the first Post Master was Joachim Connors. Dunville was incorporated as a town on June 11, 1963. By 1966, it had a population of 1,606. Along with Freshwater, Argentia, and Jerseyside, it became part of Placentia in 1991. It was flooded quite badly by Tropical Storm Chantel on August 1, 2007, when approximately 200 mm of rain fell within 6 hours. Fox Harbour is a small community on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. According to Statistics Canada in 2011, the population was 270. It is surrounded by hills. It is located close to Argentia, the site of the Naval Station Argentia. According to some sources, Fox Harbour got its name from tales of foxes that came down from the surrounding hills and ate the drying fish on the flakes. As well, the community was called Little Glocester before it became officially named Fox Harbour. History Fox Harbour started as a fishing community in the early 19th century by the three families of Matthew, Martin, and George Spurvey. However, fisherman from England and Ireland had come overseas to fish there seasonally since the 18th century. All of them returned to England in the 1820s except for a Matthew Spurvey. Ship Harbour is a community in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada located on the eastern shore of Placentia Bay. Route 100 (also known as The Cape Shore Highway and Argentia Access Road) is a major highway in Newfoundland and Labrador. The highway begins at its northern terminus at the Trans-Canada Highway ( Route 1) in the town of Whitbourne, runs for until it ends at its southern terminus, the town of Branch, where it transitions into Route 92. Motorists can drive along the coast of Placentia Bay and eventually the Atlantic Ocean once traveling south of Point Verde. The route's most important community is the town of Placentia, which is home to the province's only lift bridge.
