Newbridge Boxing Club
The Newbridge Boxing Club is a boxing gym operated by Enzo Calzaghe and based in Newbridge (Tre Celyn) in South Wales. The club has been one of the most successful of recent years, at one point in 2007 boasting three genuine world champions in Joe Calzaghe (WBO super-middleweight), Enzo Maccarinelli (WBO cruiserweight) and Gavin Rees (WBA light welterweight) . Other fighters of note who have won belts at the club include former Commonwealth light middleweight champion Bradley Pryce and former WBU champion and world title challenger Gary Lockett who retired in Sept 2008. The clubhouse The club itself is in its second generation, as the original clubhouse, deemed unsafe by the local council, was demolished in 2002. Enzo Calzaghe
Pietro Vincenzo "Enzo" Calzaghe (1 January 1949 – 17 September 2018) was an Italian-born Welsh boxing trainer. He was the father of Joe Calzaghe and the head trainer for Team Calzaghe at the Newbridge boxing club. He, along with son Joe, was a co-founder of Calzaghe Promotions. Early life Calzaghe was born and raised in Bancali, a hamlet of Sassari, in the Italian island of Sardinia to parents Giuseppe and Victoria. He moved at the age of two, with his family, to Bedfordshire. Whilst there he attended school alongside Hungarian-born Joe Bugner, who would later become a European heavyweight champion boxer. Calzaghe's father taught him to box to protect himself from school bullies. The family returned to Italy when Calzaghe was 13 and whilst there he tried to make a career as a footballer - at one point he played on the same team as Gianfranco Zola. Mikkel Kessler
Mikkel Kessler (born 1 March 1979) is a Danish former professional boxer who competed from 1998 to 2013. He held multiple super-middleweight world championships, including the WBA title three times between 2004 and 2013, and the WBC title twice between 2006 and 2010. Early life Kessler was born to a Danish father and an English mother, Ann, who hails from Salisbury, Wiltshire. He began his vocation early, training in boxing gyms at age 13. Nathan Cleverly
Nathan Cleverly (born 17 February 1987) is a Welsh former professional boxer who competed from 2005 to 2017. He is a two-time light-heavyweight world champion, having held the WBO title from 2011 to 2013, and the WBA (Regular) title from 2016 to 2017. Additionally he held multiple regional light-heavyweight championships, including the European, British, and Commonwealth titles between 2008 and 2010. Kelly Robert Pavlik (born April 5, 1982) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 2000 to 2012. He won the unified WBC, WBO, ''Ring'' magazine and lineal middleweight titles by defeating Jermain Taylor in 2007, and made three successful defenses before losing them to Sergio Martínez in 2010. David Haye
David Deron Haye (born 13 October 1980) is a British former professional boxer who competed between 2002 and 2018.
