Newark Energy Center
The Newark Energy Center is a 655-megawatt gas fired power plant in Newark, New Jersey. Approved in 2011, with construction beginning in 2012 it began commercial operations in May 2015. It is situated on a brownfield east of Doremus Avenue next to a Hess oil terminal on the Passaic River. It was originally built as a joint venture between Hess Corporation and Energy Investors Fund, and it was taken over the latter in 2014. The facility comprises two General Electric (GE) 07FA.05 combined cycle combustion turbine generators (CTGs), two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) each equipped with duct burners, one steam turbine generator (STG), one 12-cell wet mechanical draft cooling tower, and ancillary equipment. The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) is a regional wastewater utility located in Newark, New Jersey. Established in 1902, PVSC provides sewage treatment services to 1.5 million people in Bergen County, New Jersey, Bergen, Essex County, New Jersey, Essex, Hudson County, New Jersey, Hudson, Union County, New Jersey, Union and Passaic County, New Jersey, Passaic Counties. The commission also provides environmental education programs to school districts in its service area. The utility's treatment plant uses activated sludge secondary treatment technology, has a design capacity of 330 million gallons per day (MGD) and discharges to Newark Bay. The Essex County Resource Recovery Facility, also known as Covanta Essex, is a waste-to-energy incineration power station in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. Opened in 1990, it is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and operated by Covanta Energy.
