The New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing, abbreviated NEWZATS, is an incorporated professional society in New Zealand. The society was launched in December 1988, and is based in Wellington. In 2012 the Society granted life membership to Dunedin singing teacher Honor McKellar. Honor McKellar
Winifred Honor McKellar (born 10 November 1920) is a New Zealand former mezzo-soprano opera singer and singing teacher, and was the first full-time lecturer in singing at the University of Otago in Dunedin. Her students have included Jonathan Lemalu, Patrick Power and Matt Landreth. In 1989, she was awarded a Queen's Service Medal for services to music, and in 2012, she was made a life member of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing. Early life and education McKellar was born in Dunedin on 10 November 1920. Her mother was musical although McKellar does not recall hearing her sing. McKellar was taught piano by Miss Allen, and dancing by Dorothy Dean. At 16, she had her first singing lesson, from Dunedin musician Ida White. McKellar graduated with a BA from the University of Otago in Dunedin in 1942 and a MusB in 1944. Emily Mair
Emily Jean Mair (16 May 1928 – 15 May 2021) was a Scottish-born New Zealand opera singer, pianist and vocal coach. She trained a number of well-known New Zealand opera singers, including Simon O'Neill and Aivale Cole. Early life Mair was raised in Newmilns, Ayrshire where her father ran a lace-making factory. At age 15 she went to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, later moving to the Royal College of Music in London where she studied piano with Arthur Benjamin and Antony Hopkins. In her third year she joined the opera school. Career Mair sang in the BBC Chorus for three years. Between 1960 and 1962 she appeared three times (as Emily Maire) at Glyndebourne first as First Boy in Mozart's ''The Magic Flute in 1962.'' This was followed in 1961 and 1962 by singing Gianetta in Donezetti's ''L'Elisir d'amore.''
