The 1877 New York state election was held on November 6, 1877, to elect the Secretary of State, the State Comptroller, the Attorney General, the State Treasurer and the State Engineer, as well as all members of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. History The Republican state convention met on September 26 and 27 at Rochester, New York. John C. Churchill for Secretary of State, Francis Sylvester for Comptroller, William L. Bostwick for Treasurer, Grenville Tremain for Attorney General, and Howard Soule, Jr., for State Engineer, were nominated unanimously without much debate. Sylvester declined to run, and on October 19, the State Committee substituted Clinton V. R. Ludington for Comptroller on the ticket. James Mackin
James Mackin (December 25, 1822 in Newburgh, Orange County, New York – March 1887) was an American merchant, banker and politician. Life He lived at Fishkill Landing where he was a merchant and real estate agent. He was appointed Postmaster of Fishkill during the presidency of Zachary Taylor and kept the post for about four years. In July 1858, he married Sarah E. Wiltse (d. 1862). He had been a Whig, and joined the Republican Party upon its foundation in 1855. He was a supervisor of the Town of Fishkill in 1858 and 1859 and was Chairman of the Board of Supervisors in 1859. Lyman Tremain
Lyman Tremain (June 14, 1819, in Durham, Greene County, New York – November 30, 1878, in New York City) was a jurist and politician from New York. Biography He was admitted to the bar in 1840 and practiced in Durham, where he was elected to his first political office as town supervisor in 1842. He was appointed District Attorney of Greene County in 1844. He was elected Surrogate in 1846, but lost reelection in 1851. He moved to Albany, New York in 1853 and entered into partnership with former Congressman Rufus Wheeler Peckham in 1855. Elected as a Democrat, he was New York State Attorney General from January 1, 1858, to December 31, 1859. United States Greenback Party
The Greenback Party (known successively as the Independent Party, the National Independent Party and the Greenback Labor Party) was an American political party with an anti-monopoly ideology which was active between 1874 and 1889. The party ran candidates in three presidential elections, in 1876, 1880 and 1884, before it faded away. The party's name referred to the non- gold backed paper money, commonly known as " greenbacks," that had been issued by the North during the American Civil War and shortly afterward. The party opposed the deflationary lowering of prices paid to producers that was entailed by a return to a bullion-based monetary system, the policy favored by the Republican and Democratic Parties.
