New York City's 36th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It is represented by Democrat Chi Ossé. Geography District 36 is based largely in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford–Stuyvesant, also covering some of northern Crown Heights. The district overlaps with Brooklyn Community Boards 2, 3, and 8, and with New York's 7th, 8th, and 9th congressional districts. New York's 7th congressional district is a congressional district for the United States House of Representatives in New York City. It includes parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Democrat Nydia Velázquez represents the district in Congress. The district includes the Queens neighborhoods of Maspeth, Ridgewood, and Woodhaven; the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Bushwick, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Dumbo, East New York, East Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Gowanus, Red Hook, Sunset Park, and Williamsburg; and parts of Manhattan’s Lower East Side and East Village. Elections for members of the New York City Council were held in 2013. Primary elections were held on September 10, 2013, for all 51 districts of the city council. Many incumbents are termed out of office, while others were defeated in the primary, resulting in the largest turnover of council members since 2001, when 36 new members were nominated and elected to office in the council. Robert E. Cornegy Jr. (born September 24, 1965) is an American politician. He is a former New York City Council Member for the 36th district, representing Bedford-Stuyvesant and northern Crown Heights in Brooklyn. A Democrat, he was an unsuccessful candidate for Brooklyn Borough President in 2021. Early life, education and early career Cornegy is a native of New York City. He is the son of the late Dr. Robert E. Cornegy, Sr., pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Ellen J. Cornegy, the First Lady of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. He played center for Andrew Jackson High School and was recruited by both Temple University and Syracuse University before playing backup center for St. John's University's 1984-85 Final Four team. 2021 New York City Council Election
The 2021 New York City Council election were held on November 2, 2021. The primary elections were held on June 22, 2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021; these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census, candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time, stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. Instant-runoff voting (IRV) is a type of ranked preferential voting method. It uses a majority voting rule in single-winner elections where there are more than two candidates.
