New York City's 13th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It is currently represented by Democrat Marjorie Velázquez, who took office in 2022. Geography District 13 covers a series of smaller neighborhoods in the East Bronx, including Throggs Neck, Pelham Parkway, Morris Park, Pelham Bay, Pelham Gardens, Schuylerville, Country Club, Locust Point, and Westchester Square, as well as parts of Allerton and Van Nest. City Island, a small populated island to the east of the borough's mainland, is a part of the district. Pelham Bay Park, the city's largest park, is also located within the district, as are Ferry Point Park and Hart Island. Marjorie Velázquez
Marjorie Velázquez (born August 11, 1981) is an American politician from New York City. A Democrat, Velázquez is currently a member of the New York City Council representing the 13th district, which covers parts of the eastern Bronx. Early life Velázquez was born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents who had moved to New York City in the 1970s. She graduated from St. Catharine Academy and received her B.A. in finance and accounting from the New York University Stern School of Business. Political career Pre-Council career After working for several years in accounting and corporate finance, Velázquez suffered serious injures in a 2012 car accident. Westchester Square is a residential neighborhood geographically located in the eastern section of the New York City borough of the Bronx. New York's 16th congressional district is a congressional district for the United States House of Representatives represented by Jamaal Bowman. The 16th district includes the northern Bronx and the southern half of Westchester County, including the suburban cities of Mount Vernon, Yonkers, New Rochelle, and Rye. Hart Island (Bronx)
Hart Island, sometimes referred to as Hart's Island, is located at the western end of Long Island Sound, in the northeastern Bronx in New York City. Measuring approximately long by wide, Hart Island is part of the Pelham Islands archipelago, to the east of City Island. The island's first public use was as a training ground for the United States Colored Troops in 1864. Since then, Hart Island has been the location of a Union Civil War prison camp, a psychiatric institution, a tuberculosis sanatorium, a potter's field with mass burials, a homeless shelter, a boys' reformatory, a jail, and a drug rehabilitation center. Several other structures, such as an amusement park, were planned for Hart Island but not built. During the Cold War, Nike defense missiles were stationed on Hart Island. Ferry Point Park
Ferry Point Park is a park in the Bronx, New York City. The park site is a peninsula projecting into the East River roughly opposite the College Point and Malba neighborhoods of Queens. The park is located on the eastern shore of Westchester Creek, adjacent to the neighborhood of Throggs Neck. The park is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The Hutchinson River Expressway (Interstate 678) crosses the park to the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, splitting it into east and west sides. The east side of the park has a golf course called Trump Ferry Point, a community park, and a waterfront promenade. The east side borders are Saint Raymond's Cemetery; Balcom Avenue, Miles Avenue and Emerson Avenue; and the East River and the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. Pelham Bay Park is a public park, municipal park located in the northeast corner of the New York City borough (New York City), borough of the Bronx.
