New Wave (compilation Album)
''New Wave'' is a notable punk/ new wave/proto-punk compilation album released in 1977 on Vertigo Records. It introduced many US new wave artists to the UK market and helped establish the term "new wave". The album was compiled by Alan Cowderoy for Phonogram Ltd. (London) and most of the artists were on Phonogram subsidiary labels, making it essentially a sampler album. The album credits give thanks to Linda and Seymour Stein from Sire Records and Jake Riviera and Kosmo Vinyl from Stiff Records. Music critic Ira Robbins rated it one of his top ten albums of 1977. While most of the acts on the album were US acts, it also included acts from the UK ( The Damned), Ireland (The Boomtown Rats), France (Little Bob Story) and Australia (Skyhooks). Little Bob Story
Little Bob Story were a French rock group from Le Havre, formed in 1971. Biography Little Bob Story were initially made up of Little Bob (Roberto Piazza) on vocals, Guy-Georges Gremy (guitar), Barbe Noire (bass) and Mino Quertier (drums). They were managed by Roberto's brother and occasionally had tours booked by booking agent Christian Brunet who also booked Musicorama at the Olympia. Little Bob Story, played rock and roll music similar to pub rock, and were one of the few French groups to get some recognition in the United Kingdom. In 1976 they signed with Chiswick Records and took advantage of the explosion of punk rock. They were the only French act included on the '' New Wave'' compilation album, which was released in the UK in 1977. They played the Mont-de-Marsan punk festival in both 1976 and 1977 but were unable to replicate their UK success in France and disbanded in virtual anonymity in 1989. "Piss Factory" is a proto-punk song written by Patti Smith and Richard Sohl, and released as a B-side on Smith's debut single "Hey Joe" in 1974. David Thomas (musician)
David Lynn Thomas (born 1953) is an American singer, songwriter and musician based in Great Britain. He was one of the founding members of the short-lived proto-punkers Rocket from the Tombs (1974–1975), in which he played under the moniker "Crocus Behemoth," and of post-punk group Pere Ubu (1975–present, intermittently). He has also released several solo albums. Though primarily a singer, he sometimes plays melodeon, trombone, musette, guitar or other instruments. Thomas has described his artistic focus as being the "gestalt of culture, geography and sound". Common themes crop up throughout much of his work, such as the US Interstate Highway system, images of roadside or "junk" tourist culture, Brian Wilson, AM radio, and many others. Thomas has a distinctive, high pitched voice; Emerson Dameron described Thomas's singing as "James Stewart trapped in an oboe", and Greil Marcus writes, "Mr Thomas's voice is that of a man muttering in a crowd. Cheetah Chrome
Eugene Richard O'Connor (born February 18, 1955), better known by his stage name Cheetah Chrome, is an American musician who achieved fame as a guitarist for Rocket from the Tombs and the punk rock band Dead Boys. Career Rocket From the Tombs Chrome joined protopunk band Rocket from the Tombs in September 1974, having previously been in a band with member Peter Laughner. The band broke up in mid 1975, having never recorded any material. In 2003, after the release of ''The Day the Earth Met the Rocket from the Tombs'', he reformed Rocket from the Tombs with David Thomas, Craig Bell, with Steve Mehlman (Pere Ubu) on drums and Richard Lloyd (Television) replacing the late Peter Laughner. Young, Loud And Snotty
''Young, Loud and Snotty'' is the first studio album by the American punk band Dead Boys. It was recorded and released in 1977 on Sire Records, produced by Genya Ravan. The album is the only Dead Boys album to chart, peaking at 189 on the Billboard 200 in November 1977. The album was included at #7 on the ''Rolling Stone'' "10 Greatest Punk Rock Albums" reader poll. Release The album was originally released in October 1977 by Sire Records on LP, cassette and 8-track. In 1992, the album was first released on CD, and re-released on cassette, under the Sire name as part of Warner Bros. Records' Plundering the Vaults line. Dead Boys
The Dead Boys are an American punk rock band from Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The band was among the first wave of punk, and regarded by many as one of the rowdiest and most violent groups of the era. They were formed by vocalist Stiv Bators, rhythm guitarist Jimmy Zero, bassist Jeff Magnum, lead guitarist Cheetah Chrome, and drummer Johnny Blitz in 1975, with the later two having splintered from the band Rocket From The Tombs. The original Dead Boys released two studio albums, ''Young Loud and Snotty'', and '' We Have Come for Your Children''. The Dead Boys were initially active from 1975 to 1980, briefly reuniting a few times in the mid-1980s, and then later again in 2004 and 2005 for the first time without Bators, who had died in 1990. "Sonic Reducer" is a punk rock song written by Cheetah Chrome and David Thomas during their tenure in Rocket from the Tombs, which made its recorded debut on the Dead Boys 1977 album ''Young, Loud and Snotty'' with a change of lyrics that were rewritten by Stiv Bators. The song is widely regarded as a punk classic and has been covered by bands as varied as Guns N' Roses, Overkill, Pearl Jam, Veislakt, Foetus, Dozer, Leeway, Die Toten Hosen and Saves the Day. Ramones
The Ramones were an American punk rock band that formed in the New York City neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens, in 1974. They are often cited as the first true punk rock group. Despite achieving a limited commercial appeal in the United States during their time together, the band saw more success in England and Brazil, and are today seen as highly influential. All of the band members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname "Ramone", although none of them were biologically related; they were inspired by Paul McCartney, who would check into hotels as "Paul Ramon". The Ramones performed 2,263 concerts, touring virtually nonstop for 22 years. In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, they played a farewell concert in Los Angeles and disbanded. Chelsea are an English punk rock band which formed in 1976. Three of the four original band members went on to found Generation X. More than two decades after its release, the band's debut single, "Right to Work", was included in the ''Mojo'' list of the best punk rock singles of all time. History Formation (1976) The original line-up of the band was assembled in late 1976 by John Krivine and Steph Raynor, the owners of Acme Attractions, a fashion boutique shop in King's Road in Chelsea, London, comprising vocalist Gene October, guitarist William Broad (later and better known as Billy Idol), bassist Tony James and drummer John Towe; James and Towe had previously been in London SS.
