New View (Eleanor Friedberger Album)
''New View'' is the third studio album by American indie rock musician Eleanor Friedberger, released on January 22, 2016 on Frenchkiss Records. It was Friedberger’s first release on the label, and was also regarded as a departure for her, with a more minimalistic and folk-influenced sound. Upon its release, the album received universal acclaim from critics. It peaked within the top 20 of the US Heatseekers Albums chart, Friedberger’s third solo release to do so, and also became her highest-peaking entry on the Independent Albums chart. It was later ranked one of the year’s best albums by ''Uncut''. The album spawned two singles: "He Didn’t Mention His Mother" and "Sweetest Girl". New View (John Handy Album)
''New View'' is a live album by saxophonist John Handy and his quintet, recorded and released in 1967. It was Handy's second live and third release for Columbia. The original LP features three pieces: two Handy originals and a version of "Naima", recorded as a homage to saxophone legend John Coltrane, who would die three weeks after this recording (July 17). The subtitle "In Memory of" was expressly added for the release in late 1967. The song "Tears of Ole Miss (Anatomy of a Riot)" was inspired by the Ole Miss riot of 1962 and initially performed by Handy's Freedom Band, a group formed in 1963 to raise funds for Civil Rights causes. Chris Laurence
Chris Laurence (born 6 January 1949) is an English musician. Born in London, he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and primarily works with jazz and classical music. In the classical world he was principal double bass with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields orchestra until 1995, playing on many of their recordings ranging from the film ''Amadeus'' to Benjamin Britten's ''Curlew River''. He has recorded with many jazz artists, including trombonist J. J. Johnson, Tony Coe, Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Clark Terry, Johnny Mathis, and Lena Horne. His most recent recordings include John Surman's ''The Spaces in Between'' (2007), Kenny Wheeler's ''The Long Waiting'' (2012) and ''Songs for Quintet'' on ECM Records, and Norma Winstone's ''Manhattan in the Rain'' (1998). Tim Ries
Timothy M. Ries (born 15 August 1959) is an American saxophonist, composer, arranger, band leader, and music educator at the collegiate/conservatory level. Ries is in his year as a professor of jazz studies at the University of Toronto. His universe of work as composer, arranger, and instrumentalist ranges from rock to jazz to classical to experimental to ethno to fusions of respective genres thereof.
