The New Jersey Association of Independent Schools (NJAIS) serves independent elementary and secondary schools throughout the state of New Jersey. The Association consists of 70 member schools with a total enrollment of approximately 26,000 students. The New Jersey Association of Independent Schools is the representative organization of independent schools throughout the state of New Jersey. It promotes and supports educational, ethical, and professional excellence in member schools, and works to protect their independence through advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels. The NJAIS is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. An independent school is independent in its finances and governance. Also known as private schools, non-governmental, privately funded, or non-state schools, they are not administered by local, state or national governments. In British English, an independent school usually refers to a school which is endowed, i.e. held by a trust, charity, or foundation, while a private school is one that is privately owned. Independent schools are usually not dependent upon national or local government to finance their financial endowment.
