New Hampshire's 18th State Senate district is one of 24 districts in the New Hampshire Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Donna Soucy, formerly the President of the New Hampshire Senate, since 2012. Geography District 18 is based in Manchester, covering the city's 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th wards as well as the nearby town of Litchfield, all in Hillsborough County. Margaret Coldwell Hassan (; née Wood; born February 27, 1958) is an American politician and attorney serving as the junior United States senator from New Hampshire. A Democrat, Hassan was elected to the Senate in 2016 while serving as the 81st governor of New Hampshire, an office she held from 2013 to 2017. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Hassan is a graduate of Brown University and earned a J.D. from the Northeastern University School of Law. Cynthia Jeanne Shaheen ( ; née Bowers, born January 28, 1947) is an American retired educator and politician serving as the senior United States senator from New Hampshire since 2009. A member of the Democratic Party, Shaheen served as the 78th governor of New Hampshire from 1997 to 2003. She was the first woman elected governor of New Hampshire, the first woman elected to the Senate from New Hampshire, and the first woman elected as both a governor and a U.S. senator.
