New City, Chicago
New City is one of Chicago's 77 official community areas, located on the southwest side of the city in the South Side district. It contains the neighborhoods of Canaryville and Back of the Yards. The area was home to the famous Union Stock Yards until it closed in 1971, and the International Amphitheatre until it was demolished in 1999. Neighborhoods Back of the Yards Back of the Yards is an industrial and residential neighborhood so named because it was near the former Union Stock Yards, which employed thousands of European immigrants in the early 20th century. Life in this neighborhood was explored in Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel ''The Jungle''. The area was formerly part of the town of Lake until it was annexed by Chicago in 1889. New City is an unincorporated community in Cotton Hill Township, Sangamon County, Illinois, United States, in the rural center of the state. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Location New City is widely recognized by local residents as being the small area surrounding the intersection of County Highway 40 (recognized as Cardinal Hill Road/New City-Pawnee Road) and County Highway 37 (recognized as New City-Chatham/New City-Sangchris). It is located a short distance from Rochester, Illinois and the much larger Springfield, Illinois. Most residents who live in or near New City have Rochester, IL mailing addresses under the zip code "62563". Some residents living to the south of the town are under the Pawnee mailing system. Hudson is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, with a total population of 20,092 as of the 2020 census. Before its incorporation as a town in 1866, Hudson was a neighborhood and unincorporated village of Marlborough, Massachusetts, and was known as Feltonville. From around 1850 until the last shoe factory burned down in 1968, Halprin 2001: p. 7 Hudson was a mill town specializing in the production of shoes and related products. At one point the town had 17 shoe factories, Halprin 2008: pp. 7–10 many of them powered by the Assabet River, which runs through town. The many factories in Hudson attracted immigrants from Canada and Europe. Today most residents are of either Portuguese or Irish descent, with a smaller percentage being of French, Italian, English, or Scotch-Irish descent.
