Netball At The 2006 Commonwealth Games
The Netball at the 2006 Commonwealth Games was the third Commonwealth Games tournament. The preliminary matches were held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre with the finals being held at the multi-purpose Melbourne Park in the inner city. Netball was among the most popular sports with viewers at this Games, with most tickets selling out in the initial ballot, and no more being available until a second release in the week before the Games - a rare event in a competition where many tickets remained unsold in the final week before the start of competition. Matelita Shaw
Tui Manu'a Matelita, born Margaret Young, and also known as Makelita, Matelika or Lika (31 December 1872 – 29 October 1895) was the Tui Manu'a (paramount chief or queen) from 1891 to 1895. She ruled over Manu'a, a group of islands in the eastern part of the Samoan Islands (present day American Samoa). During her tenure, she served largely a ceremonial role at her residence on Ta'ū where she received British writer Robert Louis Stevenson. Matelita never married because she would not marry any of the eligible native chieftains and no other men were regarded as having the proper rank to marry her. She died of illness in 1895 although later reports claimed she died by a more violent means. She was buried in the Tui Manu'a Graves Monument. Life She was born on 31 December 1872. Mary Waya
Mary Waya (born 25 May 1968) is a Malawian netball player and coach. Waya started playing international-level netball at age 14, and has played in more than 200 representative matches for Malawi. During that time she has competed in two World Netball Championships (1995 and 2007), three Commonwealth Games (1998, 2006 and 2010), and two World Netball Series (2009 and 2010). Waya came to international prominence during the 2007 World Championships in New Zealand, where the Malawian national team (the "Queens") finished 5th, their highest ever placing. She announced her retirement after the tournament, but returned to international competition the following year. Abby Marie Sargent ( née Teare; born 25 May 1977 in Melbourne, Australia) is a retired Australian netball player. Sargent was also a member of the England national team that played in the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games. She also played for the Melbourne Kestrels (1999–2000) and the Melbourne Phoenix (2007) in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy. Pamela Asibie Cookey (born 2 September 1984 in Birmingham, West Midlands) is a former English netball player, usually posted to goal attack (GA). Club career In domestic netball, Cookey has played with Team Bath in the Netball Superleague since the competition's inception in 2005, winning two titles in 2005–06 and 2008–09. Louisa Brownfield
Louisa Brownfield (born 14 April 1984), also known as Louisa Watson, is a former England netball international. She was a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011 World Netball Championships. Between 2006 and 2015, Brownfield also played for Mavericks in seven Netball Superleague grand finals, helping them win two titles in 2007–08 and 2011. Rachel Margaret Dunn (born 14 November 1982) is an English international netball player. Dunn debuted for the England national netball team in 2004 against South Africa, and was a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games, and a silver medal at the 2010 World Netball Series. Jessica Tuki (born 28 October 1987 in New Plymouth, Taranaki) is a former New Zealand professional netball and basketball player. She played for the Northern Mystics in the ANZ Championship and was previously in the Silver Ferns in 2006. Tuki replaced Jodi Brown in the team to go to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, after Brown injured her knee. She has previously played for the Western Flyers (2004–05) and the Otago Rebels (2006) in the National Bank Cup. She also trialled for the Tall Ferns basketball team.
