Nemuro, Hokkaido
is a city and port located in Nemuro Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Nemuro Subprefecture. Much of the city lies on the Nemuro Peninsula. As of February 29, 2012, the city has an estimated population of 29,087, with 12,966 households, and a population density of 56.74 persons per km2 (147.0 persons per sq. mi.). The total area is . History Nemuro was developed by fisheries. Nemuro Subprefecture
is a subprefecture of Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. Japan claims the southern parts of the disputed Kuril Islands (known as the Northern Territories in Japan) as part of this subprefecture. As of March 2009, the subprefecture has an estimated population of 84,035, and an area of 3406.23 km². Nemuro Peninsula
The Nemuro Peninsula (根室半島 ''Nemuro-hantō'') is a peninsula which extends from the east coast of Hokkaidō, Japan. It is some long and wide, and forms part of Nemuro City. Cape Nosappu at its tip is the easternmost point of Hokkaidō. The northern coastline is on Nemuro Bay, while the south faces the Pacific Ocean. Islands of the Habomai (Khabomai) Archipelago, administered by Russia but claimed by Japan, extend eastward from the peninsula. Climate Most of the Nemuro Peninsula has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification ''Dfb''). However, due to the influence of the Seasonal lag, the midsummer season is often scheduled from the end of August to the beginning of September. For example, spring in Cape Nosappu often doesn't arrive until the end of May, and in some years winter doesn't even end until the end of June.
