Neil Paterson (rugby Union)
Neil Paterson (born 9 August 1975) is a professional rugby union referee who represents the Scottish Rugby Union. He now serves as a Television Match Official for the Pro14, and in international matches. Rugby union career Playing career Amateur career Paterson started playing rugby union in Northern Ireland. He played for Malone RFC in Belfast. On moving to Scotland, Paterson then turned out for Dundee HSFP. A fly-half, he was top scorer for the club in seasons 2000-01 and 2002-03. His playing career highlight was captaining the Scottish University team against the English University team. Scotland won the match. Referee career Professional career In Scotland he joined the Midlands Society of the SRU. His first game in charge was Fife Southern 2XV v Stirling County 3XV in December 2003. The 1872 Cup – also known as the 1872 Challenge Cup – is a men's rugby union tournament contested every year between the two Scottish professional clubs, Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby. Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby use selected United Rugby Championship league matches against one another to decide the Cup winners. The highest aggregate score in the home and away ties decides the 1872 Champions. Not only is the Glasgow – Edinburgh fixture the oldest inter-district rugby match in the world, but the derby is classed as one of the biggest in world rugby. The United Rugby Championship (URC) is an annual rugby union competition involving professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. The current name was adopted in 2021 when the league expanded to include four South African teams previously from the SANZAR Super Rugby competition. The league is one of the three major professional leagues in Europe (along with the English Premiership and the French Top 14), the most successful teams from which go forward to compete in the European Rugby Champions Cup. Since 2022–23, despite the name, South African teams have been eligible to qualify for European competition, and one South African place is guaranteed.
