Neil McCallum (footballer, Born 1868)
Cornelius "Neil" McCallum (3 July 1868 – 5 November 1920) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside right for Renton, Celtic, Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Heanor Town and Scotland. McCallum had the distinction of being part of the Renton team that defeated West Bromwich Albion in a challenge match in May 1888, billed as the "World Championship". By now also an international but still a teenager, later in the same month he joined the newly formed Celtic and scored the club's first ever goal in their inaugural match, a 5–2 win over Rangers. When he won the Scottish Cup during his second spell at Celtic in 1892 alongside former Renton teammate James Kelly, they became the first players to win the competition with two different clubs, having also been victorious with their old club in 1888. Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. Scottish League XI
The Scottish League XI was a representative side of the Scottish Football League. The team regularly played against the (English) Football League and other national league select teams between 1892 and 1980. For a long period the annual fixture between the English and Scottish leagues was only second in importance to the matches between the two national teams. The fixture declined in importance after regular European club competition was instituted in the 1950s; matches in the 1960s and 1970s were played irregularly and poorly attended. James Kelly (15 October 1865 – 20 February 1932) was a Scottish Association football, footballer who played for Renton F.C., Renton, Celtic F.C., Celtic and Scotland national football team, Scotland. At Renton, his hometown club, Kelly had won the Scottish Cup twice (1885 Scottish Cup Final, 1885 and 1888 Scottish Cup Final, 1888), as well as a beaten finalist in 1886 Scottish Cup Final, 1886 and a 'World Champion' after they defeated West Bromwich Albion in an 1888 World Championship (football), 1888 challenge match.
