Natural And Cultural Heritage Of Croatia
The natural and cultural heritage of Croatia ( hr, Prirodna i kulturna baština Republike Hrvatske) comprises sites, monuments, goods and species of particular importance to the Republic of Croatia which are protected by national law. The Croatian constitution states that the protection of natural and cultural heritage, as well as their use needs to be regulated according to the constitution and laws of the Republic of Croatia (art. 2). The State Institute for Nature Protection ( hr, Državni zavod za zaštitu prirode, DZZP) is an institution centrally responsible for specialized nature protection activities in Croatia. It was set up by the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Croatia dated 30 October 2002 and started operating in September 2003. The Register of Protected Natural Values of the Republic of Croatia ( hr, Upisnik zaštićenih prirodnih vrijednosti) has been created according to the ''Nature Protection Act'' (Croatian ''Zakon o zaštiti prirode'') in 2005 (Ch. III/5, OG 70/05 with amendments in 2008, OG 139/08). The register is being administered by the ''Administration for Nature Protection'' ( hr, Uprava za zaštitu prirode Ministarstva kulture) within the Croatian Ministry of Culture ( hr, Ministarstvo kulture). The register serves as a reference database and unique official data source about protected areas in Croatia. The data in this register is public with the exception of special cases of confidentiality regarding the position of certain protected natural goods. World Heritage Sites In Croatia
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites are places of importance to cultural or natural heritage as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972. Croatia, following its declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on 25 June 1991, succeeded the convention on 6 July 1992. Currently, there are ten sites inscribed on the list and 15 sites on the tentative list. The first three sites, Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian, Dubrovnik, and Plitvice Lakes National Park, were inscribed to the list at the 3rd UNESCO session in 1979. The main protected areas of Croatia are national parks, nature parks and strict reserves. There are 444 protected areas of Croatia, encompassing 9% of the country. Those include 8 national parks in Croatia, 2 strict reserves and 11 nature parks.
