National System For Integral Family Development
The National System for Integral Family Development ( es, Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia, links=no; SNDIF or just DIF) is a Mexican public institution of social assistance that focuses on strengthening and developing the welfare of the Mexican families. The institution was founded in 1977 by Carmen Romano, the wife of Mexican President José López Portillo and First Lady of Mexico. Its national director reports directly to the President of Mexico, and the role was traditionally held by the First Lady until 2000, when President Vicente Fox, who was unmarried, appointed Ana Teresa Aranda to the post. Its local chapters report to municipal presidents and governors. Carmen Romano de López Portillo (born Carmen Romano Nolk; 10 February 1926 – 9 May 2000) was the First Lady of Mexico from 1976 to 1982. She was the first wife of Mexican president José López Portillo. Personal life and death In the 1970s, actress Sasha Montenegro maintained a relationship with José López Portillo, who was still married to Carmen Romano, with whom he had three children. José Guillermo Abel López Portillo y Pacheco (; 16 June 1920 – 17 February 2004) was a Mexican writer, lawyer and politician affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) who served as the 58th president of Mexico from 1976 to 1982. López Portillo was the only official candidate in the 1976 presidential election, being the only president in recent Mexican history to win an election unopposed. Ana Teresa Aranda Orozco (born January 26, 1954 in León, Guanajuato) is a Mexican politician affiliated with the National Action Party who served as Director of the DIF (the "National System for Integral Family Development") from 2000 to 2006. Immigration to Mexico has been important in shaping the country's demographics. Since the early sixteenth century with the arrival of the Spanish, Mexico has received immigrants from Europe, Africa, the Americas (particularly the United States and Central America), and Asia. Today, millions of their descendants still live in Mexico and can be found working in different professions and industries.
