National Squash Centre
The National Squash Centre is a squash venue in Eastlands, Manchester, England, which was constructed for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The National Squash Centre is part of the Sportcity complex. Costing approximately £3.5m, the facilities include six courts and one glass-walled show court (this alone cost £110,000). The show court is moveable: it floats on air like a hovercraft and can be positioned in the athletics hall for all major tournaments. The show court has a maximum capacity of 1,200. All of the courts can be converted into either singles or doubles courts. The Centre has hosted the British National Squash Championships since 2003, the Men's World Open 2008, the Women's World Open 2008 and hosts the annual British Grand Prix, a PSA World Series event. Squash is a racket-and- ball sport played by two or four players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow, rubber ball. The players alternate in striking the ball with their rackets onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. There are about 20 million people who play squash regularly world-wide in over 185 countries. The 2002 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XVII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Manchester 2002 were held in Manchester, England, from 25 July to 4 August, 2002. The 2002 Games were to be hosted in the United Kingdom to coincide with the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II, head of the Commonwealth, and Manchester was selected for the 2002 Games ahead of London using a recycled part of the project, which lost the 2000 Summer Olympics and Paralympics to Sydney, Australia. Sportcity
Sportcity in Manchester is a multipurpose sports and leisure facility. Originally built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, it is in east Manchester, a mile from Manchester city centre, and was developed on former industrial land including the site of Bradford Colliery. Sportcity's largest structure, the City of Manchester Stadium, is home to Manchester City F.C. and is one of the largest football stadiums in England. Sportcity is also home to the National Squash Centre, Rugby Football League headquarters, Manchester Regional Arena for athletics and British Cycling, who operate out of Manchester Velodrome and the National Indoor BMX Arena. The British National Squash Championships are the national squash championships for players from the United Kingdom & Ireland. They are held annually in early February, currently in Nottingham. The Championships were inaugurated in 1974 are not to be confused with the British Open Squash Championships which is open to all nationalities and is the oldest squash tournament. The championships also involve masters events for British squash players in different age groups. The British Grand Prix is an annual men's squash tournament that takes place at the National Squash Centre in Manchester. The tournament was part of the PSA World Series (2010-2011), the most prestigious class of event in the PSA World Tour. The tournament was founded in 2010 and takes place in September. PSA World Series
The PSA World Series (formerly known as the PSA Super Series) was a series of men's and women's squash tournaments which were part of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour for the squash season. The tournaments were some of the most prestigious events on the men's tour. The best-performing players in the World Series events qualified for the annual PSA World Series Finals tournament. Each year, several tournaments on the tour were designated World Series events. These included major events such as the World Championship, the British Open, the Hong Kong Open or the Tournament of Champions.
