Fordyce, Arkansas
Fordyce is a small town in Dallas County, Arkansas, United States. Its population has been decreasing since the 1980's when the town reached an all time high of 5,175. The population in 2020 was 3,396 down from 4,300 at the 2010 census, and from 4,799 in 2000. The city is the county seat, home to the 1911 Dallas County Courthouse. Within Fordyce there are 19 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Fordyce Home Accident Insurance Company. The town was named for Samuel W. Fordyce. Geography Fordyce is located in southeastern Dallas County, with the city's southern border following the Calhoun County line. U.S. Routes 79 and 167 bypass the city center to the north and west, while Arkansas Highway 8 passes through the downtown area. Arkansas Highway 35 is a northwest–southeast state highway in southeast Arkansas. The route runs from Dewey near the Mississippi River northwest to Arkansas Highway 5 in Benton. Route description The route begins in Dewey at Macon Lake Road near Island number 81 on the Mississippi River. AR 35 runs through bayous and fields in Chicot County, briefly entering Desha County for a junction with AR 159/ AR 208 in Halley. Returning to Chicot County, AR 35 intersects the four-lane divided US 65/US 278 and US 165 east of Dermott, before entering the city. AR 35 serves Dermott as Speedway St before entering Drew County. The Camden Expedition Sites is a national historic landmark consisting of nine nationally significant historic places in southwest Arkansas where events of the Union army's disastrous Camden Expedition of 1864 occurred during the American Civil War. The Union was attempting to take over Shreveport, Louisiana. Each of the sites are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was designated a national historic landmark on April 19, 1994. The National Park Service (NPS) nomination refers to nine sites, yet only eight of them are listed by name. Battle Of Marks' Mills
The Battle of Marks' Mills (April 25, 1864), also known as the Action at Marks’ Mills, was fought in present-day Cleveland County, Arkansas, during the American Civil War. Confederate Brigadier-General James F. Fagan, having made a forced march, attacked a train of several hundred wagons, guarded by a brigade of infantry, 500 cavalry, and a section of light artillery under command of Lieutenant-Colonel Francis M. Drake of the 36th Iowa, on its way from Camden to Pine Bluff for supplies. Drake had a reputation as an Indian fighter; in 1852 at the age of 19, he led a wagon train from Blakesburg, Iowa, to Sacramento, California, and, while crossing the Nebraska prairie, his train was attacked by an estimated 300 Pawnee warriors. Drake organized and led a spirited defense of his train and, although greatly outnumbered, he and seven companions beat the attackers off, reportedly after Drake personally killed their leader with his knife. Arkansas Highway 97
Highway 97 (AR 97, Ark. 97, and Hwy. 97) is a north–south state highway in Cleveland County. The route of begins at Highway 8 and runs northwest to US Highway 79 (US 79) in Kingsland. The route is maintained by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Route description The highway begins at Highway 8 in the southwest corner of Cleveland County near New Edinburg at Marks' Mills State Park and a National Historic Landmark. Highway 97 runs northwest toward Kingsland, beginning a concurrency with Highway 189 just south of the city. Once inside the city limits, Highway 189 turns left at 1st Street, ending the concurrency.
