Battle Of Elkin's Ferry
The Battle of Elkin's Ferry (April 3 – 4, 1864), also known as Engagement at Elkin's Ferry, was fought in Clark and Nevada counties in Arkansas as part of the Camden Expedition, during the American Civil War. Prelude Major-General Frederick Steele had the 3rd Division of the Seventh Army Corps and two cavalry brigades (about 8,500 men) under his command, whereas Brigadier-General John Marmaduke had three cavalry brigades (about 7,500 men) under his command. During the Camden expedition, Federal forces had to ford the Little Missouri River because all of the bridges were impassable. Battle With all the bridges across the river destroyed, Steele ordered Brigadier-General Frederick Salomon, commanding the Third Division, to take and hold a ford known as Elkin's Ferry on the afternoon of April 2, 1864. Beirne, Arkansas
Beirne is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in southern Clark County, Arkansas, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 36. It is located southwest of Gurdon, at . History Beirne was first settled in 1880 by James Lewis Beirne of Grafton, Illinois on that he had purchased. Within a year there was a planing mill and a store, along with a railroad depot to serve the area. In 1890 the community was known alternately as Beirne or Beirne Station. By 1897, Beirne had at least two saw mills that made lumber for furniture and other uses. Lumber is still the main industry in Beirne, with Anthony Timberlands having their hardwood operation there. Nevada County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,997, less than half of its peak in 1920. The county seat is Prescott. Nevada County is Arkansas's 63rd county, formed during the Reconstruction era on March 20, 1871, from portions of Hempstead, Ouachita and Columbia counties. Whelen Springs is a town in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 92 at the 2010 census. From 1930 through 1939 the town thrived, being a main hub of operations for the then powerful Ozan Lumber Company. Amity, Arkansas
Amity is a city in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 723 at the 2010 census. The city began on the Caddo River in the mid-19th century when William F. Browning and others, including A.B. Clingman, at various times moved to the area. History Amity was founded in 1847 by several pioneer families from the Mount Bethel area of Clark County under the leadership of William F. Browning, who served as the Clark County surveyor from 1846 until his death in 1854. The group settled along the Caddo River, drawn to the area by an abundance of rich bottomland and fresh water. Browning constructed a two-story log house just west of Caney Creek, which soon became the center of the expanding community. It was Browning who gave Amity its name.
