The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) is a trade union in South Africa. With a membership of 235,000 it is the largest public sector union in the country. It organizes State, Health, Education and Welfare workers. History The union was founded in 1987, when the Health and Allied Workers' Union merged with the General and Allied Workers' Union and the South African Allied Workers' Union. The NEHAWU is affiliated with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), and Public Services International and the Trade Union International Public Service and Allied employees. General And Allied Workers' Union
The General and Allied Workers' Union (GAWU) was a general union in South Africa. Background The union originated as the Transvaal section of the Black Allied Workers' Union. In 1980, Rita Ndzanga and Mary Ntsike led a split which became GAWU. It formed as a non-racial union. Its members were made up of people from the brush and copper industries, mining house office workers, cleaners, scooter drivers, and petrol and transport workers. Numerous local South African Congress of Trade Unions activists also joined, including Samson Ndou, Ephraim Shabangu, Samuel Pholoto and Sydney Mufamadi. By 1985, the union had 19,076 members. Michael Mzwandile Makwayiba is a South African trade unionist. Born in Ntlangaza, in the Eastern Cape, Makwayiba began working on an apple farm in Grabouw. In 1990, he moved to work as a cleaner at the Green Point-Somerset Hospital. There, he joined the Health Workers' Union. He soon became one of the union's most prominent activists, and was elected as its deputy president in 1992. In 1993, the union decided to merge into the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU), and Makwayiba became deputy chair of its Western Cape region, and chair of its Cape Town branch. In 1997, he was elected as chair of the union's Western Cape region, also becoming chair of the Congress of South African Trade Unions in the Western Cape. Phillip David Dexter (born 1 December 1962) is a South African politician, activist, and entrepreneur. He has held many positions in various organisations. Dexter was a senior researcher in the Social Cohesion and Integration Research Programme of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Before joining the HSRC, he was an executive director of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac). Dexter holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Religious Studies, a BA in Philosophy and Politics, and a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Cape Town. He entered politics as a student activist; after spending seven years in exile, he returned to South Africa in 1990. The Trade Union International Public Service and Allied (TUI PS&A) is a section of the World Federation of Trade Unions representing public sector workers. History The union was founded at a conference in East Berlin on October 29, 1949 as the International Union of Trade Unions of Postal, Telephone and Telegraph Workers. The South African Allied Workers' Union (SAAWU) was a general union in South Africa. The union was founded in 1978 as a split from the Black Allied Workers' Union by workers in Durban.
