National Association Of Therapeutic Schools And Programs
The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) is a United States trade organization of therapeutic boarding school, therapeutic schools, residential treatment center, residential treatment programs, Wilderness therapy, wilderness programs, outdoor therapeutic programs, young adult programs, and home-based residential programs for adolescents and young adults with emotional and behavioral difficulties. It was formed in January 1999 by the founders of six programs within the so-called "troubled teen industry," and its board of directors consists of program owners and educational consultants. Ironically, all but one of those founding six programs have been shut down in the ensuing years for a variety of reasons, including child abuse, neglect, licensing violations, and successful class action lawsuits. Provo Canyon School (PCS) is a psychiatric youth involuntary residential treatment center, owned and operated by Universal Health Services (UHS) since 2000. The involuntary residential program claims to use an "Acuity Based Care" (ABC) model that identifies and re-assesses the strengths and needs of its students. Residents instead receive a wide range of interventions including psychotropic drug therapy; use of physical restraints; humiliation; starvation; and solitary confinement. For nearly its entire history, the facility has faced accusations of abuse due to its abusive practices. These accusations gained renewed attention in 2020 when media personality Paris Hilton released a documentary detailing the abuse she and other former residents claimed to have faced at the facility. Élan School
Élan School was a private, coeducational, and controversial residential behavior modification program and therapeutic boarding school in Poland, Androscoggin County, Maine. It was a full member of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP). The facility was closed down on April 1, 2011, due to reports of abuse, many from former students, dating back to its opening in 1970. Élan was located on a campus that was formerly a hunting lodge. There were also other campuses, such as the one on 424 Maplecrest Road in Parsonsfield, Maine, which was formerly a hotel and hospital before it was bought by Élan in 1975. Aspen Achievement Academy
Aspen Achievement Academy was a wilderness therapy program for adolescents, based in Loa, Utah. It was operated as a part of Aspen Education Group. The program has been moved, in name only, and merged with another wilderness therapy program in Utah - Outback Therapeutic Expeditions - in March 2011. According to the program's promotional materials, Aspen Achievement Academy enrolled adolescent males and females, ages 13–17, with a history of moderate to severe emotional and behavioral problems, such as low self-esteem, academic underachievement, substance abuse, and family conflict.
