National Academy Of Fine Arts
The National Academy of Arts ( bg, Национална художествена академия) is an institution of higher education in Sofia, Bulgaria. It is the oldest and most renowned school of arts in the country. History The National Academy of Arts was founded in 1896 by noted artists and public figures such as Ivan Mrkvička, Anton Mitov, and sculptor Boris Schatz, as well as men of letters in the likes of Konstantin Velichkov and Ivan Shishmanov. The original faculty also included Czech painter Jaroslav Věšín. The National Academy of Arts' main edifice was built in 1906 after a project by Alexander Smirnov, the construction being guided by F. Schwanberg. Renowned painter Nikola Marinov served as Chancellor in the period 1935-1937 and was a professor between 1921 and 1940. Christo Vladimirov Javacheff
Christo Vladimirov Javacheff (1935–2020) and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (1935–2009), known as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, were artists noted for their large-scale, site-specific environmental installations, often large landmarks and landscape elements wrapped in fabric, including the ''Wrapped Reichstag'', ''The Pont Neuf Wrapped'', ''Running Fence'' in California, and ''The Gates'' in New York City's Central Park. Alexander Telalim
Alexander Telalim (born 1966) is a Ukrainian and Bulgarian visual artist. He graduated from the Grekov Odesa Art School in Odesa, Ukraine, and then from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. He lives and works in Sofia. Telalim is one of the Bulgarian artists working predominantly in watercolour. He combines the natural fluidity of watercolour with the power of sharp lines, creating amazingly vivid and emotional works. His paintings harmonize visions of childhood with his philosophy. The conciseness of his medium highlights the depth and expressiveness of his watercolours in the heritage of Zen philosophy. He also works as a calligrapher and book illustrator. Sencer Sari
David Judson Sencer (November 10, 1924 – May 2, 2011) was an American public health official who orchestrated the 1976 immunization program against swine flu. Between 1966 and 1977, he was the longest serving director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in this capacity, he did nothing to stop the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, in spite of ethical concerns raised internally. From 1981 to 1986, he was Commissioner of Health of the City of New York. Personal life and education Sencer was born on November 10, 1924, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Nikolai Rainov
Nikolai Rainov ( bg, Николай Райнов) (1889–1954) was Bulgarian writer, poet, artist and scholar. He was one of the most remarkable East European modernists. Nikolai Rainov was born on January 1, 1889, in Kesarevo, Veliko Tarnovo Province, Bulgaria. In 1908 Rainov graduated from Sofia Theological Seminary. He was offered a scholarship from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to continue his studies in Theology in Russia or to study Philosophy in Germany. However, the offer was under the condition Rainov get ordained, which he refused. In 1911 he enrolled into Sofia University to study Philosophy. After serving as war correspondent during World War I in 1919 he graduated from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia. In 1919 Rainov started an extensive journey to the East. Vera Nedkova
Vera Nedkova ( bg, Вера Недкова) (16 November 1906 – 7 July 1996) was a Bulgarian modernist painter. A graduate of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, she is known as "the grande dame of Bulgarian painting." Born in Skopje to Bulgarian diplomat Todor Nedkov, Vera and her family immigrated to Sofia after Skopie fell under Serbian control during the Balkan Wars. In 1923, Nedkova enrolled at the National Academy of Arts, where she studied painting under renowned professor Nikola Marinov. Alzek Misheff
Alzek Misheff (Bulgarian: Алцек Мишев) (October 8, 1940) is a popular Bulgarian-Italian artist born in Dupnica, Bulgaria. Misheff graduated in 1966 with a degree in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 1971 he left Bulgaria for Italy where he currently lives and works in Milan, Italy. Misheff is named after the Medieval Bulgar leader Alcek who led the Bulgars to Italy and settled in the area of Benevento. Angel Metodiev
Angel Metodiev (''Angel Metodiev Angelov'', Bulgarian: Ангел Методиев Ангелов) (16 March 1921 – 29 April 1984) was a Bulgarian fine art painter (Classical Realism) and teacher. He was particularly famous for his portraits, nudes and landscapes. Violeta Maslarova
Violeta Christova Maslarova ( bg, Виолета Христова Масларова) (1925–2006) was a noted Bulgarian artist known for her romantic and moody seascapes. Along with Georgi Baev and Kiril Simeonov she was often referred to as one of the 'Bourgas Colourists'. Her career spanned both the communist and the capitalist era of Bulgaria with mixed effects on her art and career. Maslaraova (née Buchvarova) was born to a poor family in Burgas, Bulgaria. Her father, Christo Buchvarov was a builder who succumbed at a relatively young age to severe Parkinson's disease, brought on according to family tradition by business failure caused by his partner's embezzlement, which left him a partial invalid. Yoan Leviev
Yoan Isakov Leviev ( bg, Йоан Левиев) (October 31, 1934 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria – March 11, 1994 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria ) was a Bulgarian artist, painter, and creator of monumental artworks such as large-scale mosaics and murals. Leviev was a member of the innovative Plovdiv School of the 1960s - a group which also included Encho Pironkov, George Bozhilov, Dimitar Kirov, Kolyo Vitkowski and Hristo Stefanov, known as the "April Generation".
