Nashville's Metro Council
The Metropolitan Council is the legislative body of the consolidated city-county government of Nashville, Tennessee and Davidson County. The Council has 40 members, 35 of which are district council representatives, and five of which are council members at-large. If an at-large member resigns or dies before serving a full four-year term, the member's seat remains vacant until the next election. If a district council members resigns or dies more than eight (8) months before the end of their four-year term, a special election is held to fill the seat. At-large council members are elected by the entirety of the area the metropolitan government encompasses. The Metropolitan Council is the 3rd largest in the United States, behind the Chicago City Council and the New York City Council. Jim Shulman
Jim Shulman is the vice mayor of Nashville, Tennessee and President of the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County. He was sworn in on September 17, 2018. He is also the CEO of Safe Haven Family Shelter, a Nashville-based organization that helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Previously, Shulman served as a council member representing the 25th district from 1999 to 2007 and then as an at-large council member from 2015 until he was sworn in as vice mayor. As an at-large council member, Shulman was one of three no votes on a $14 million incentive package for the Opryland water park. Vice Mayor Election Shulman was elected in the 2018 special election. After finishing second in the general special election, Shulman won the runoff, defeating Sheri Weiner.
