Narada Multicast Protocol
The Narada multicast protocol is a set of specifications which can be used to implement overlay multicast functionality on computer networks. It constructs an overlay tree from a redundantly meshed graph of nodes, source specific shortest path trees are then constructed from reverse paths. The group management is equally distributed on all nodes because each overlay node keeps track of all its group members through periodic heartbeats of all members. An overlay network is a computer network that is layered on top of another network. Structure Nodes in the overlay network can be thought of as being connected by virtual or logical links, each of which corresponds to a path, perhaps through many physical links, in the underlying network. In computer networking, multicast is group communication where data transmission is addressed to a group of destination computers simultaneously. The Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP), defined in , is a routing protocol used to share information between routers to facilitate the transportation of IP multicast packets among networks.
