Naples is a town in Ontario County, New York, United States. The population was 2,417 at the 2020 census. The Town of Naples contains a village, also called Naples. The town is located in the southwestern corner of Ontario County. The annual Naples Grape Festival is held in September, and the area is known for its wineries and grape pie. History and other information Naples was part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The town was established in 1789 along with Ontario County, on the old Native American village Nundawao, and settlement began the following year. The town was also part of the Underground Railroad, with old houses still having hiding spots to this day. Naples is an American sociologist, and currently Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Connecticut, where she is also director of graduate studies. She has contributed significantly to the study of community activism, poverty in the United States, inequality in rural communities, and methodology in women's studies and feminism. Naples was formerly Commissioner of Motor Vehicles in New York; she was appointed State Motor Vehicles Commissioner by then-Gov. George Pataki in January 2006 following a 12-year political career in Western New York. She served as a Cabinet member for the final year of Pataki's term. Naples was also formerly a member of the Board of Directors of Amtrak. Naples was elected in 1993, 1997, and 2001 as County Comptroller of Erie County, New York. Aloysius Francis Naples (August 29, 1926 – February 26, 2021) was an American Major League Baseball shortstop who played for the St. Louis Browns in . He is one of about 200 players in major league history to be credited with exactly one base hit. Naples was born in Staten Island, New York and attended Georgetown University, where he majored in Latin, from 1946 to 1949. Naples Reef is a fringing reef located off the Gaviota Coast of Santa Barbara County, California. It is an underwater pinnacle and cave system that is a popular scuba diving and fishing area. There are fishing restrictions in place, however recreational take by spearfishing of white seabass and pelagic finfish is allowed. Ecology Naples Reef is a rich, productive habitat, with anemone-covered underwater walls rising 30-feet from the sea floor and a kelp forest that supports various fish and wildlife. White seabass, kelp bass, rockfish, colorful nudibranchs, red gorgonians, pelicans, harbor seals and a variety of crabs, lobster and scallops all share the reef. The specific point of discharge is onto Naples Beach, a unit of the Half Moon Bay State Beach. This watercourse runs through the city of Half Moon Bay, which municipality has planning jurisdiction over the creekside area within its city boundaries.
